Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

Someone answer this question PLEASE:

Is the Technology a patent or only the name? Someone else with the same savvy could do it, then there's no one to stop them, right?

Well, you can't really patent taking a signal off the chips.
Then again, that was never the biggest struggle with Andromeda - if I remember correctly, what took Juan so long to perfect was what to do with that signal once he had it.

I imagine that the method in which its done (i.e. the software) is what is protected.
Then again, I'm no attorney.

I hope that a thousand reel-stream-like companies arise and that in the pursuit of buying them all off, The Beast goes bankrupt.

Hydras of the world - unite! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

As some of you already know, the Hydra/Andromeda technology is indeed being sold/licensed and thus Reel-Stream will no longer be installing units to individual users.

So... basically Juan figured out a way to make the HVX (and similar cameras) Viper-esque and decided to sell/LICENSE the technology.
By licensing the technology he will be able to make a buck everytime it is used in a camera system anywhere around the world (or get a buck everytime the Hydra Camera System is sold anywhere around the world)

If the Hydra tech is no longer available to the individual buyer, I highly doubt the company that bought it would make an exception no matter how many people stepped up to buy one for their HVX.

Juan- you could have spoken sooner - Not with details, but maybe a "updates soon", or "we're still here" would have been light years better than ZERO communication. Makes your (Reel Stream) departure not so glorious. (if you care)

This thread should be closed/deleted.

Ok oK guys. So it sucks that we won't get Hydra.

But put yourself in Juan's shoes. Let say he dumped over 200k developing Hydra & Andromedia. And lets say someone offered 2mil to buy him out but told him to keep quiet or the deal was dead. I think most of us would have opted to not say anything and made sure we didn't jeopardize the 2mil deal.

I mean, who knows what the numbers are, but its not like Juan has lied to us or anything.

Congratulations Juan, and good luck in your future projects.

As for the indie community. My condolences since we will probably not see Hydra to fruition. :(

ps: for the company that bought them, I hope they are using the technologie for soemthing useful. Maybe we (Indie Makers) won't benefit from it, but who knows. Maybe they are using it for medical equipment, etc... If you are just buying to kill it. Shame on you, but that is just my opinion (its amercia and you have the right to do so) Now for the electric car, shame on them who killed it. this was an enviromental issue which has hurt us all.

Note that he says "Reel-Stream will no longer be installing units to individual users."
Now, sure, that's annoying for HVX users, esp people who purchased recently anticipating Hyrdra. But he leaves it open that it will be integrated directly into a brand new camera instead.
Hydra cam, anyone?

I doubt that Sony/Panasonic/Cannon would need to buy this technology for integration into their cams, they have people on staff that could have done this on their own. This sucks!

To all the people that doubted this would ever come out, you were right, and the rest of us were, are, and forever will be WRONG.
No company is going to sell this because of an online petition. And even if they did, at what price?

-its over

Well, you can be pessimistic about it, or you can do what you can to try to change the outcome. Juan left the door open to the possibility of the new owners deciding to sell it depending on demand.

Worth a shot at the least. There is nothing to lose, and it's better than just sitting around boo hooing, right? (not being mean, just the choice of words)

later,
Jason

Personally, I don't believe Reel Stream proved to be any real threat to any 'major' camera manufacturer.
So I seriously doubt anyone bought the company in an attempt to 'squash' the technology.
Anyone who bought the tech is obviously well aware of the demand for it.
(I can only assume no one would put money into something like this without researching it...right?)

So I think they clearly plan on doing something with it.
The question is.... what?

I just got an email from Juan telling me he just posted an update on the Reel Stream forum.

http://forum.reel-stream.com/viewtopic.php?t=849

Here it is:

Hello everyone,

First of all, my apologies for not posting this information earlier, but I was hoping to iron out as many details as possible.

As some of you already know, the Hydra/Andromeda technology is indeed being sold/licensed and thus Reel-Stream will no longer be installing units to individual users. At this time I can't post more details about the future of the technology, but it seems likely that it will not be marketed to the public. I have a feeling that if there is enough interest there is a possibility this could change, but it is not their plan at this time.

As for myself, I will be working on high-end Digital Cinema products for another company.

I would like to thank everyone who supported us and cheered us on. I have been absolutely swamped in recent weeks with emails and calls, unfortunately I can't provide what most of you request (a one-off Hydra prototype) Smile

I also thank those who at any point in time provided criticism in any form, promoting tests and discussion. I think this helped the digital acquisition marketplace become more technically-saavy and accurate, better defining the bounds of creative freedom with current technology.

Please feel free to post any questions. I will post any relevant public information as it becomes available.

Cheers!
Juan

So there you go.
No longer rumor - it's definitely true.
Looks like Andromeda is no longer for public consumption...and Hydra will never be.

Am I the only one that caught that bolded detail? Bought out AND given a job. Was Juan already lobbying for a position at a "high end" cam manufacturer's house?

Kiss Reel-Stream's brand of Uncompressed from HVX200 goodbye. That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't people that can do the same thing. Juan's layed out a little breadcrumb trail, to be honest, with the Andromeda.

It'd be a batter of picking up the public notes and adapting it to an Ethernet based workflow. Who knows, someone might already be thinking about doing it?

Signed. . .

I certainly do not take any delight at all in seeing Hydra die despite my predictions of its demise. Indeed, most pessimists delight when we're wrong, and I'm certainly not an exception on that score.

The buyer? I think it's RED. In my opinion, they had the most to lose to a great low-cost system based upon the HVX, and, further, they obviously are snapping up really sharp people like Graeme Nattress. Why not Juan?

Good thing I just worked myself a trade up the RED number chain!

Stephen
