Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

One way to look at it is also from... the other side of the fence. As torn up as I am that we probably won't get to see any Hydra-ized HVX's, there's still more than just US to think about.

I'm not speaking for Juan or the numbers that he has, don't claim to know them. A lot of times all of the R n D spent on something isn't recouped through sales. They put a lot of time into both Andromeda and Hydra up until now on the latter and for Hydra... how many people would've truly invested in it?

We could all say yay I yes, but there were probably just as many Andromeda supporters that didn't buy after it was all said and done.

If the Company has been sold, it's probably a number that made all of their hard work worth giving up, and they probably get their much deserved earnings from all the hard work.

I'm sad to see it go! But, don't forget that business is business and a lot of times it's not fair at all. At least it sounds like it might be fair to the hard workers.

More recently I believe it was expected the end of October.
That being the case, he could well have finished it and then been bought out (or in the process).
Doesn't mean it won't still appear somewhere.
Never know...someone might be preparing a big launch and thus want Juan to shut up Apple style.

Because no video format ever devised records 4:4:4. Video maxxes out at 4:2:2.
HDCAM SR?
.......... a 1920x1080 Beyer sensor would have 960x540 blue and 960x540 red resolution, the same size as used on the pixel-shift HVX, but the single Beyer sensor's individual pixels would be 1/4 the size of the size of pixels on three individual sensors used in a pixel shift arrangement.
True, but it's worth noting that in this example the Beyer sensors 1920x1080 pixels (2x960x540 and 1x 1920x540, for green) would all have unique positions within the image. In the case of the HVX200, 500, then the red and blue pixels are not shifted with respect to EACH OTHER, only in relation to the green ones. Hence this arrangement only has 2x960x540 UNIQUE position sites.

But yes, for the same size chip it means bigger pixel sites (4x relative to Beyer), but only half the unique sites. Better sensitivity, but less resolution, all else equal.

As far as the Red resolution points, then I'm prepared to believe that a Beyer sensor will give resolution up to it's monochrome dimensions, though it's important to realise that resolution tails off gradually. (And by 4K is likely to be pretty low.) But it won't be, can't be, 4K 4:4:4 resolution, even if a 4:4:4 signal is recorded.

Beyer sensors and pixel shift inherently give higher luminance resolution than chrominance, for all the reasons Barry stated. Exactly as the human eye does.

I just tried your link and got "Error 404 file not found"
That's because the link in the message was bad, it had an extra "]" after it. Fix that and the forum link comes up just fine (I edited his message to fix that so anyone clicking on it from now on will get the proper link.)

HDCAM SR?
Yeah, I guess. SR doesn't seem like a video format though, it doesn't comply to normal video standards because it requires dual-link HD-SDI to get 4:4:4. I classify it more up there with a special-purpose acquisition system like Red's Redcode Raw or Cineon files, rather than "video". But it's definitely more of a "video" system than Red's system, so I guess that'd qualify.

You are getting the 404 error because there is a "bracket" at the end of the address. Remove it and you will hit the link (and it still there). I am not implying by the link being up that their business is still alive, just that the webpage still up.

Cheers,

Gualbert

Thanks to Barry and Gualbert.
Tried the editd link, and yes the page comes up. Doesn't really mean anything though until Juan comes on to give us some info
We're still just speculting in the dark (Doesn't mean it aint fun though)
Cheers,
Dave

I just got an email from Juan telling me he just posted an update on the Reel Stream forum.

http://forum.reel-stream.com/viewtopic.php?t=849

Here it is:

Hello everyone,

First of all, my apologies for not posting this information earlier, but I was hoping to iron out as many details as possible.

As some of you already know, the Hydra/Andromeda technology is indeed being sold/licensed and thus Reel-Stream will no longer be installing units to individual users. At this time I can't post more details about the future of the technology, but it seems likely that it will not be marketed to the public. I have a feeling that if there is enough interest there is a possibility this could change, but it is not their plan at this time.

As for myself, I will be working on high-end Digital Cinema products for another company.

I would like to thank everyone who supported us and cheered us on. I have been absolutely swamped in recent weeks with emails and calls, unfortunately I can't provide what most of you request (a one-off Hydra prototype) Smile

I also thank those who at any point in time provided criticism in any form, promoting tests and discussion. I think this helped the digital acquisition marketplace become more technically-saavy and accurate, better defining the bounds of creative freedom with current technology.

Please feel free to post any questions. I will post any relevant public information as it becomes available.

Cheers!
Juan

So there you go.
No longer rumor - it's definitely true.
Looks like Andromeda is no longer for public consumption...and Hydra will never be.

Who killed the electric car?

Who killed the Hydra?

So this is good for Juan and big business, but bad for indiefilmmakers, right?

Sadness...

I wonder who was the evil Hercules that decapitated this little indie-dream. Or maybe it wasn't really Hercules but a wannabe anti-hero, and there is still hope for a new Hydra-like cine-head to spawn somewhere else.

Quite an educating thread here though. :)

Big oil bought the Hydra and our chance to buy a super affordable Prius just died!

Maybe I'm going a bit far with this, but perhaps someone else will come up with similar technology?

Technology keeps getting better and better and cheaper and cheaper. There is till hope. I'm just tired of buying new equipment and playing catch up.

RED has theright idea, it's just out of my price range.

If enough cameras get out there, maybe renting is the way to go.

When we do find out who bought it, sounds like we need to start pressuring them to release it for purchase as was originally intended :)

Juan did say if there was enough market demand that they may consider doing that.

Late,r
Jason

Someone answer this question PLEASE:

Is the Technology a patent or only the name? Someone else with the same savvy could do it, then there's no one to stop them, right?

What a slow, painful death that was.

So a big company did buy it just to kill it. To me, that seemed like the most likely scenario all along. I think a lot of people underestimate big companies. These people don't f#@k around. If you mess with them they will squash you like a bug.

We all just lost a big battle, but maybe we can win the war.
