Duke Nukem fan film

Hey everybody, I am looking for help at getting this idea off the ground.

I dont know how many of you have played the Duke Nukem games (I am hopping most cause they are freaking classics) or were looking forward to the movie, but I would really love to make a short (20 minutes at most) fan film starring Duke and his alien, ehhhh, friends and lots of blood, violence, sex (PG-13 level sex) and alot of explosions. If youve ever played the games, you what I'm talking about, theres hardly any story, and its really simple: kill everything, defeat the boss, save the chicks.

I am just at a loss where to begin. I know the company who owns the copyrights to the games encourages fan games and theres been plenty made, but I dont know about films. However, I am wondering if I should even bother to approach them before I know weather or not its even possible with the amount of FX I'd have to use and the budget I have ($0.00USD). I have all the animation/modeling software I need (3DS Max and AE, plus countless plugins and tools) and Photoshop, but my character modeling/animation skills are nowhere near what I'd need to make it look good. I have a couple of friends who are relitively good with modeling, but I dont know anyone who could do character animations without motion capture assistance, and i DONT have access to a mocap studio, and probably cant at my budget. Then theirs the other end of the FX scale which would be just using elaborate costumes with a bit of FX help and tricky cinematography. Some of the effects I'd need for sure are easy to do, but most of them are pretty hard.

I'd be shooting it on a DVX100a, using minimal color correction and then uprezing to 720pHD for free web distribution.

What do you guys think? I know most of the FX i can do, but their are some key ones that I have no chance of pulling off.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Dory

My roommates and I used to play Duke Nukem. Classic stuff.

As far as your idea for a fan film. If it's something you feel strongly about then you should go for it but it sounds like a big project. Were you thinking of doing a full length feature or a short film? I would suggest a short film for starters. Test the waters and see if you can create the style you want.

It would be a short, like 20 or 30 minutes max. I thought up some workarounds for the antagonists while i was in the shower (always a good place to think about Duke HAHA), like completely covering them in "protective" gear because they cant survive earths atmosphere or something. I think that itself might make it way easier, since I wouldn't have to animate complex alien characters and then composite them.

Another idea I had was to use alot of first person angles to bring back the feel of DN3d (Manhatten project OWND but i missed first person).

i think since DN Forever is looming in the nearish future, it might be a good time to make such a fan film.

Damn...just dug up Duke Nukem 3d, Quake and Redneck Rampage, but can' get em working on my comps....both desktop and laptop are running windows XP

Somewhere I have a XP savvy copy of D3D. Its pretty sick its actually 3d enimys and weapons, no more sprites and such. PM me and I'll see if i can get it to you.

Well, you could always use the Duke Nukem level editor to make the models for your film - at least the sets. :)

DeSica- You need an old machine, which is why I built my one. Some programs are just worth it. Go digging around Craigslist, and most folks are giving away their 486 machines.

Dory- First person is the way to go. I've been waiting for the Duke Nukem film for like 6 years now. I think a fan film would be fine, but it would have to be a fun project, not something to distribute. Maybe do the intro and level one? The big question is, where will you find a small city block?

Thanks for the info, guys...I actually took a look at the CD cover...it's Duke Nukem-Manhattan Project.

Says will run on XP, and even reccommends Pentium 3 system. Tried installing it, but the comp froze and stalled. Going to try again...
