Those who support writer's strike

All of those stories were preceded by Lawrence Manning's The Man Who Awoke, a collection of stories wherein the hero finds a society in which everyone has been hooked up to a giant computer, which uses direct nerve stimulation to keep them in imaginary dream-worlds.

Truly, there ain't nothing new under the sun.

And...brian, willya please post the source of that 'producer quotation?'

Well even then that's only a modern-day take on the age-old belief that all consciousness is linked and shared. It's an idea as old as the human race, so I'm not faulting anybody for that.

My problem is when you can find exact images, exact shots that they're sharing, well that ain't no different from directly lifting the words from a screenplay.

http://galeon.hispavista.com/cinerama/actu2/matrixdarkcity.htm I wish the pages with the Ghost in the Shell vs the Matrix screencaps were still up. And there were pages with stills from Matrix vs the Invisibles comic books. You can see they're the exact same thing.

Some of those are convincing, but some shot comparisons are just ridiculous - I mean, at some point you gotta be able to shoot cars, stairs, staircases, windows and streets without somebody screaming "double!" "plagiarism!" - it's not like either of these invented such shots out of whole cloth. The world contains cars, streets and stairs - it's not necessarily a ripoff to shoot those. That said, yes, some of those are definitely borrowed - a sensation that's stronger when you see a whole bunch of them... one or two would be an accident, but when you have that many....

Honestly I couldn't read through 15 pages. So I just feel to a certain extent that I deeply agree and support the strike. If it weren't for the writers, nothing would be made in the first place. In terms of &'s and cash I have no idea. I've just heard about it so probably not in my right to judge tbh.

I support it.. I'm out of work because of it, but I hope to work toward
that 'showrunner' category at some point, so they are fighting for what
I'd like to be able to leverage when I get there.

Yeah, I was all in favor of the strike until I heard on the radio today that 24 is cancelled until the strike is resolved. :crybaby:

Exactly. They better not set back 24 a fornight as they mentioned. Though, i'm still not sure on the tv series. I think it's clear what twists are gonna occur though. Anyway.. bot. My bad.

Greg - that's cool that you support the strike.

Bla - I think you fell off some train that lacks a true understanding to what is happening here. It's not just about residuals, it's about

AMERICA

and how the little guy can take a stand against big business and say, "Hell No!" and have their sentiments known. Big business is out for the bottom line and if it were not for the FREEDOM we have to strike, to assemble together and unite to fight against the greedy mongers, then as a country we would have failed long ago.

The bottom man in the industry is the writer. Without the STORY the moguls themselves would be without a job. Moneys are generated from the very foundation, which is the story, which stems from the writers. The writers, like TRUE AMERCIANS, are fighting for what they believe is fair.

.08 on dvds and at least 'something' out of new media. This is their battle.

You may not like it, you may not agree with it, but it is AMERICAN way of life. Big business considers only bottom line and how much they can rake in for themselves. Without unions, without the assembly of strikes, big business would rule our very lives.

STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE

It's the American way!

it's about

AMERICA....AMERICAN way of life.

Yeah, it's not like unions exist anywhere else in the world, or that they started in Britain....or can be linked to old European guilds in certain aspects.

Is this also inherently and solely American?

3 strikes...you're thinking of baseball.....

I don't know about "Striking being the American way", because here in Florida, you don't work, they'll can you and hire somebody that does... usually for less.

I see you're still pissed off over that whole American Revolution thing. Come on man, get over it! We had to break away! The chicks all have bad teeth over there. Major turn off.

I'm not british, so it really doesn't bother me at all. The one time you guys invaded us, back in 1812, the british here replled you guys and torched the President's residence in Washington...since then you have been white washing it.

You're welcome.

I think people from all around will be in some way interested in the outcome of this thing...our own writer's guild may well take notes on what goes down and why.

The the thing that I find most confusing is that the writer's are asking for a piece of revenues earned through internet and such, which seems only fair, if you equate it to other mediums.

DVD lets me watch my movies and TV at home or on the road.

On demand lets me watch my movies and TV at home, at my leisure.

Pay per view lets me see it in hotels and travel destinations...and all those revenue streams pay the writer his residuals...so why not internet and wireless?

It just seems so logical. New media, same concept.

One would think... though the current deals have drastically different
payouts that are tied to the media delivery mechanism, not the content.

The system is antiquated. Heck, at this point, you'd be foolish to want
a 100% share of VHS sales :)

Sure, but why? Just have a base percentage....if somene buys a copy of Ghost on DVD for 12 bucks, give the writer, director, actors, etc., their tiny cut, and if the entire cast of Joe Versus The Volcano re-enacts the entire film in a some billionaire's living room for a vast sum of money, same thing goes...

I said as much in an earlier post...which just illustrates how basic the concept is...
the media used to deliver the content is expanding and shifting...the studios are obviously aware of that, and are attempting to adapt so as to continue earning revenues...so why not pay the people you were already paying?

Thats exactly how it *doesn't* work today... hence, the strike.

Though the original mistakes are so deeply intrenched, its still a fight for
a residual on this.. and a different residual on that.
