Extreme Riser - read this if you have Cavision parts...

Again, does this fall into the "if you have to ask...."pricing league? How much is the damn LEX setup?

Hi guys:

If you have the regular Cavision setup like Adam has, the upgrade piece is $40.00

If you have the double riser setup that I have, the front riser, rear riser and wedge plate is $100.00 for all three pieces

The Zacuto Z-Riser is $330.00 but Steve will give you a discount to bring it down under $300.00. Still a lot more money. The Zacuto stuff is very nice but you had better have some serious bucks to put together a whole Zacuto system. Their rod base alone is $560.00 list. Add rods, risers, accessory holders, battery plates and you are in the thousands of dollars easily. Love their stuff but it's more for people who want the absolute custom created best and are willing to pay for it. The thing is, none of that stuff improves the picture or sound, it just makes operating the camera a little easier.

Mark my words, in three years, we will look at these rigs we are concocting here and laugh our asses off! I am sure that within a few years, some camera company will figure out an electronic or optical cheat to give us this same depth of field and choice of optics that the Brevis, Letus, M2 and SG Pro do and we won't need HVX-sized cameras with 18 things hanging off of them.

It's a phase we are going through. It's fun and cool but makes me feel like a hacker/hot rod builder. My HVX rig will be 24" long and will weigh around 20 lbs when all is said and done. Kind of ridiculous, isn't it?

Dan

Not sure if it will all be so laughable. We are essentially adding cine style items to a decent camera, and that never goes out of style. I think the only way we'll ever dispense with the adapter is moving up to a 2/3" camera. My next cam will almost certainly be a RED, though.

Right but 5 years ago, who would have thought someone would create a $3,500.00 camera that shot 24p? Everyone was merrily shooting interlaced and a few people decide that shooting video with true film look would be cool. Lo an behold, we got the DVX-100. Then we all wanted to shoot HD but did not like the compromises with HDV. Who would of thought that we could get a $5,000.00 HD camcorder that shot in the same codec and format as the $70,000.00 Varicam? On solid state memory? Lo and behold, the HVX-200.

If Panasonic, Canon, Sony and JVC read these threads and see lots of projects shot with 35mm adapters, someone will know that developing a camcorder with built in shallow depth of field and 24P with removable lenses is desired and they will make it and we will buy it. The market is there, it's just a matter of how long it will take for the electronic companies to realize that they can leapfrog their competition by introducing a $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 camera that can do this.

I recall when 24P was really new, nobody but video geeks even knew what 24P meant. Now I have friends buying consumer camcorders to shoot home movies of their kids and they ask me which cheap camcorders can shoot in 24P! I never thought I would see the day.

Best,

Dan

If you don't have the screw, can you give us the specs on the head type (is it Allen, I assume like the rest?), diameter, length, thread count/type so we can begin seeking it out?

Dan,

I believe it is an M4 screw.

Thanks Jason, I received the parts today and have assembled the system. I have definitely not fine tuned it yet but I think it's going to work out fine.

To all of the other Cavision owners, here are a couple larger snaps of what the system looks like. It does raise the HVX to a level that I was able to successfully mount my matte box.

I really like the Zacuto stuff but at $100.00 for this solution versus over $300.00 list for the Z-Riser, I think I will see how this works out.

If you order these parts from Cavision, use these images along with Jason's pictures earlier in this thread to figure out how it all goes together, it is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle but does go together and is solid and steady. Yes, that HVX is floating quite a bit up in the air there but it seems just as solid as before.

Thanks once again Jason for a speedy solution that looks as if it is going to work out great!

All the best,

Dan

I am with Dan. But my estimate is earlier, maybe in two years. Its already here conceptually. Its called the MINI RED. I think Jim will work on the mini as soon as the RED ONE being stabilized.

Hey Jason, glad ot see you on the boards here- I didn't know you were a part fo the community here. We've emailed several times, and I placed an order with you recently- but it is fun to see you here.

Is it possible to order just these two parts? I have everything else. Having these parts would complete the set. What part numbers do I need to be able to order them and how much do they cost?

Hi Ryan:

It's very confusing to tell from the photos but you actually need three parts, not two. That front piece that you circled, you also obviously need the back piece but what is almost impossible to see in this photo is that you also need the small wedge plate for the rear to bring the height up high enough to reach the RPM-90D camera plate.

I am sure that Jason will respond but he is probably sleeping like a normal person instead of web surfing at 11:30 at night like I am. According to my invoice, you need

(1) RSV15 - Rods V Part (for Letus Extreme) $30.00
(1) RSF1560 - 15mm rods front bracket with 60mm spacing w 60mm T part $50.00
(1) P - Parts (Left - right Extension wedge) $10.00

$90.00 plus shipping. It took me studying Jason's photos to figure out how to put this whole thing together.

Best of luck,

Dan
