Extreme Bokeh stills

There are some things to be careful about in evaluating bokeh with these adapters - Basically just making sure that there is nothing displeasing about how blooming of hot spots is handled by the diffusing screen. Likewise being aware of the differences in DOF from screen to screen.

Those are legitimate concerns, but I agree all this discussion of round vs. octoganal stuff is really pretty abstruse for most of us in the working world. Just on the basis of what i've seen on the web, most of this discussion has really been out how the 35mm lenses affect bokeh and that's irrelevant to the adapter.

I'm with "Beat Takeshi" - what about all that Grain in the Bourne Supremacy. Any of you guys going to complain to Kodak about what you saw on the stills at DVXUser?

is grain not part of the whole film look idea?

if you don't like adapter footage, don't use it.

ps. I also can't wait for my Extreme to come, should ship out around 15 november according to the letus guys.

My follow focus, and rails are arriving tomorrow and tuesday!!!

Let it go, my friend, and be happy with another adapter.

I mean all of this respectfully, it's just that the same complaint every day gets a little old.
Absolutely -- I've thought about saying the exact same thing. Almost every post by David about the Exteme seems in some way to complain about the Extreme or to try to find fault with it or raise concerns about it; if that's the case, this isn't the adapter for you. Get a Brevis or an SG Pro or an M2 (or whatever else it is that you deep down really want) and be happy.

Great stills from Bourne, Steven. This is a point I made earlier - how many of us are complaining about the bokeh in many of the feature films that looks very similar to the 35mm adapters we're railing over - Bourne's got odd shaped bokeh and it looks fine. The Ocean's films have it and it looks fine. Transformers has it and it looks fine... why does it not matter? Because we're concerned about what's in focus - hopefully that's where the story lies -

Too many of us have gotten WAY carried away overall of this - again, I'm very excited to take ownership of my LEX - counting the days :)

I heard they used the Letus FE on Bourne with a 28-200mm f2.8-f5.6 zoom lens using a PD150. Think they did quite well considering. :-)

On a more serious note. People should stop complaining about something they themselves haven't actually used. The Letus Extreme is capbable of beautiful images. Just yesterday I did my first proper test with it and it is the sharpest footage I have managed to get out of any adaptor. The Bokeh thing...how you want it to look is controlled by YOU just like In every aspect of cinematography you use the tools at your disposal to get that look by tweaking, lighting, lenses, filters etc. The Letus Extreme is purely one example. For me it is a very worthy addition to my arsenal, I will be using it constantly, but also be using my XDCAM HD or my DSR 450 depending on what I want it to look like. I even sometimes shoot with my JVC HD201 "clean"!!

If you look on my website at the short Dusk, a lot of this was shot in the same location as my Letus short "Saturday Afternoon", it was't shot using an adpator. Shot purely with my DSR 450 in progressive mode. It has a 2/3rd inch chip but only records in DVCAM, still looks great though. Waffle over!!

I heard it was one of the other adapters and they had to actually turn the projector upside down in theaters.

You also have to put the DVD in the player label side down to get it to play right ways up.

I'm pretty disappointed with the Letus in one respect: I thought it would make pretty pictures for me. Sadly, I still have to learn how to do that on my own.

.. where did you hear that phil?

sorry that was a joke in reference to seeing grain and odd shaped bokeh! If they had I think Letus may well have got a little bit of publicity out of it! They actually used some old fashioned thing called flim or something similar. Weird! I wonder if someone will do an HDV adaptor for a Panavision 35mm camera, stick the optics and sensor size of say a Sony Z1 and record it onto 35mm film. Now that would be funny!!!

David, you seem to be fighting this bokeh business so vehemently, I don't understand why you are trying to make the Extreme something it's not. The Extreme is what it is and if you have a problem with it, buy one of the other adapters. There are many people here that are not bothered by the bokeh of the Extreme and are either willing to live with it or make some compromises.

Let it go, my friend, and be happy with another adapter.

disjecta,
well said.
I'm glad that I 'm not the only one who is tired of David's constant complaining. I, for one am looking forward to receiving my letus this week and using it on paying gigs. The fact alone that the image is right side up and sharp across the frame is enough for me to buy one.

I bet if David found a $100 bill laying on the floor he would still complain because it's only $100 and not more. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Sorry David i had to do it lol.

OK DAvid is picky but keep it cool everyone.

Theres a HUGE factor here that everyone seems to forget. BOKEH IS A FUNCTION OF THE LENS. slap on a S4, and it will look "better". Crappy lenses on my SGpro look like crap.... BECAUSE ITS A CRAP LENS.

Notice the Circular Donut like out of focus points of light.... Technihcally thats "bad", but the sharp parts are tight , so i still like the lens.

GOOD LENS: Canon FD 35mm F2.0 @ F2.0, SGPROrev2 Under Sodium Vapour lights at a street fair.

Complaints? The Adapter had little to do with this performance.

The L-EX seems to be doing ok in the image rendition department. I am looking forward to getting one some day.

Agreed. David has had some very persistent questions regarding the Extreme - for which I'm thankful because I have learned so much MORE about the Extreme and am even more confident in my purchase. If you ask questions, you'll only get answers (and I will profit from them!).

I am just as eager as everyone to play with the Extreme and various lenses to determine how to achieve the desired look.

Thank you Barry, disjecta, David, Tim and everyone else for your time and effort in educating all of us by asking/answering questions, posting stills, uploading footage and explaining the science of things.

Now, back to the hype :) Mine arrives Tuesday!

Haha... please guys refer to the "35 adapter Mission Statement" sticky.... they are just metal tubes with plastic inside..... no need to get nuts!

Good god Timur, The last grab from the SGPRO is AWESOME ! I am saving for one !! How many stop in light loss for the SGPRO there ??

Hi guys, It's o.k if I m the "BOO man". I not trying to put the Letus down , Because I've ordered one in Sep too..

I'm o.k if they sell this adapter as a bright adapter that has limatation.

"You can get good bokeh but you have to step the lens down. Bright adapter, but you have to live with the ghost image and be attentive to the bright light smear."

I am trying to get the Letus people to make the Extreme better, If they could solve this flare or smear problem and still be as bright and yet give good bokeh, wouldn't it be better for all?

I was also the one who started asking if the Letus extreme would be given a 1 year warranty, and soon enough it was given.

I read that the Extreme has back focusing issue( Tim Tyler's Review), I ask if the Letus would try to make the Lens mount with markings at each side so that when one start adjusting for back focus, they could know that the mount is parallel to the G.G . This way it is so much easy when you change lens mount and that the back focus is easly attain with the mount parallel to the G.G. instead of a guessing game or having the trouble to use a callipar.

Having trouble to mount the Extreme with a matte box? I tried asking if they would bulit a riser or block so that most of us will be able to use the Extreme with our existing rails or unless all of you here like to spend more money on another set or having to mount a second rail set.

Yes I guess, I'm picky. That is why I took so long to get married...:)

The on going thing about Bokeh is always subjective to personal taste, But light smear or glows are another issue all together

Am I asking the Extreme to fly and bring me the Sky or make George Bush a democrat ?
