Hints for the New HVX User

I have an HVX coming in a few days. Unfortunately, I have to shoot a project in just over a few days, so I'm only going to have 1-2 days to acquaint myself with the camera. I'm going to do a bunch of tests and everything (I have Barry's book, of course).

Do you guys have and hints/tips of things to be wary of? (It's my first P2 camera)

Thanks!

Well sheepishly I'd recommend my DVD on the HVX, it focuses on Final Cut Pro but there's plenty in there to learn about general P2 workflow and data management. Other than that read through this forum and practice with the camera a lot.

Along with that I'd recommend Vol 1 of the HVX Bootcamp DVDs for general camera operation and familiarity with the menus and options.

I would simply recommend getting out and shooting as much as you can, whenever you can. Less talky! More shooty!

I second Noah's recommendation because it's such a great product. I would also highly recommend Barry Green's HVX Bootcamp DVD.

The best thing I can suggest is make a decision on what format you want to shoot. Shoot that format, save the scene file on the camera before turning it off. Bring the files into your edit system. Make sure everything works all the way through dubbing to tape. Do this as many times as lack of sleep will allow!

DON'T play with everything the HVX CAN do.

If you MUST do a paying gig with a 2 day old camera with so many options, experiment only with what you need. Once you have this job out of the way, get the books and DVD's and play to your hearts content. It is an awesome camera.

I wish you all the luck.

Thanks guys, you're a huge help. I got both the hvx bootcamp and Noah's dvd, and they should be here soon so I can start learning it all. I'll probably sleep with them too, maybe I can learn through osmosis.

Don't worry, it's not a paying gig, just class assignment, but it is my final... so it's probably even more important than a paying gig.

Thanks!

Well, I wouldn't say that until you have kids and a mortgage
:)

Best of luck with your project - come back and let us know how it went.

No no, I understand the importance of paying gigs... I need to pay off this HVX! Good thing I don't have kids though... they wouldn't get any attention one the hvx comes.

In P2 mode, "Focus Assist" and "Detail" (EVF dtl button) are your friends. Focus assist enlarges center of the frame enabling you to focus more precisely, and detail helps you hone in on perfect focus. When you can,
use the viewfinder rather than the LCD screen.
