HVX200, PMW-EX1 or Small RED (model not confirmed)

Some things have changed since I wrote that; the EX1's price is a little lower so it's not 45% more, it's 30% more. We've also learned that there's no monitoring whatsoever when shooting off-speed frame rates with it, which means no HD-SDI capture when doing slow-mo or fast-mo.

I was also off when I said P2 is in 300 broadcast organizations worldwide. It's actually 600! The 300 was for the US, worldwide it's in 600+ broadcasters.

I still expect in bright light conditions that the Sony will be notably sharper, and in lower light conditions that it'll be cleaner (for the price increase and pixel density, it'd better be!) It remains to be seen if it'll have any "oil paint" effect like their other 3-chip CMOS, the V1.

Overall I'm just disappointed with it in that it forces you to choose long-GOP. It'd have been very nice if they'd have put in a short-GOP option (like an HD version of their BetaSX, which used a 2-frame GOP) or no-GOP (like all their professional codecs, MPEG-IMX and DigiBeta and HDCAM and HDCAM-SR). If they've got 800mbps cards, why not include a no-GOP option? Curious.

But it should be a good product despite that, provided they've taken pains to minimize the rolling shutter effects. If its wobble is minimized like the Red, that's a good thing. If it wobbles like the V1U or HV20, that's ridiculous at this price point, so that remains a big unanswered question as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting discussion. The B&H thing had me concerned until my HVX arrived today. I will keep my order for the EX1 but in the meantime, I will be putting the HVX through it's paces.

It's true, the 4:2:2 compared to HDV is certainly superior. I used the HVX for a shoot at Longwood Gardens along with a Sony HDV and the color was amazing on the HVX video. I don't agree with the pricing argument though. Maybe not an argument but seems to be a bone of contention. I paid 5200 for the HVX but I had to spend another 1800 for, well take your choice, P2 or Firestore. So I think price is a non issue. I think it comes down to those other qualities and personal preferences. I think others now have that "wait and see" anticipation going on.

And is wearing an "XDCAM" shirt.

He wears Sony underwear, too. It's an article by Nigel Cooper, who is a Sony proponent and spokesperson (do a search on Creative Cow forums).

BUT the person who linked this article took his comment out of context. He simply said that ALL solid state recording is "twitchy." Not P2 but *all* versions. He is known for being against the move to solid state (I think archiving is his biggest issue with it).....but now (that Sony is going solid state) he is saying (he has to) good things about going tapeless and, of course, Sony's version is the best!

One question I either missed or it was not addressed is the dynamic range or latitude. What is the sony's lattitude and how does it compare to the hvx. I read somewhere its about the same as the xdcam 330, but I don't know what its D.R. is either.

Thanks
