Top 10 Films of 2002...

In another thread, some of us went on to name our picks for the best of the best for 2003. I thought it would make for good film discussion if we were to do the same for 2002, and work our way through the years in reverse (let's say a new year every five days or so.)

Please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions"

Brice,

I believe Black Hawk was 2001

Edit:
I'm not as critical of the Staw Wars prequels as some; but in hindsight, Attack of the Clones stands out to me as the weakest link. It does have some really good scenes, but the over-powering CG elements are too much to take at times. That being said, I left Spiderman off my list for the same reason.

Nice top picks:thumbsup:, Blaine. With Gangs of New York, I feel some unfair criticisms have been pinned on it. It isn't at all a bad film (not that the great and powerful Scorsese is immune to making one.) It is, however, somehow underwhelming emotionally (especially for being an epic period piece.) Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing it in the theatre...but afterwards it's impact on me was surprisingly short-lived.

What can I say? It was a great couple of years for musicals.

I am happy to see Minority Report being represented on the majority of the lists so far.:)

Signs, Pianist, Catch me if you can

those are the only ones I actually like from all your lists.
Catch Me If You Can...what a film! 2002 will be remembered for the year that we met the "new" Spielberg.

I can't believe that those are the ONLY three that you have dug so far. Come on... after saying that, you gotta pony up a top ten list of your own.

Edit:

...The Count of Monte Cristo...
Dammit, man...good call! (I thought for sure mine would be the lone list with this title on it.) Is this film under-appreciated, or what? And what perfect casting! Jim Caviezel...Guy Pearce...Richard Harris...WOW!
Hell, I'll go so far as to label this epic the greatest Alexandre Dumas film adaption ever...
edging out:
The Three Musketeers (1973) http://imdb.com/title/tt0072281/
The Three Musketeers (1948) http://imdb.com/title/tt0040876/
-and-
The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) http://imdb.com/title/tt0025004/

I disagree. He has been overlooked in the past; but had he gotten the big prize for 2002, it would have been basically a nod to his career as a whole, and an apology for the oversights in the past. It would not have been for the film at hand IMO.

That's right, the same thing that happened when Paul Newman got the Oscar for The Color of Money instead of the GREAT performance in The Verdict the previous year.

i gotta disagree, Scorsese is a great director. he should have won for Gangs of New York and the Aviator (although I do like Eastwood, I'd like to see Scorsese win though) IMHO.

Well 2002 was a bad year for films but this is the best:

Adaptation
Y Tu Mamá También
Solaris
Minority Report
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Can somebody please explain why you guys are putting Signs on your top ten list? This is one of the most wretched films I have ever seen. My sis wholeheartedly agrees with me, so what is it about you people? Don't take offense, I just don't get why you all can't see how bad a film it is. One of the wacky mysteries of life, I guess. * shakes head in disbelief *

Probably for the same reason you're listing Solaris.

Well, you know the old proverb...

One man's Signs is another man's Solaris.

...or something like that.
