IN EXTREMIS by JOHNSON and HYTEN

Somehow that rebukes the old saying that you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose...

Set call tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. for TommyInLA, Blaine, Bullis, Zach and Tim. Stebbs and Tony may still be at the Ontario airport from what I hear.

I am going to stay up tonight with a hose to spray the embers that are blowing onto the Fat Monster Films office roof.

heh heh, wrong cost ...

Yes, indeed. The cost of our production was extraordinarily high and very wrong. But it is, indeed, the cost of freedom ... the veritable cost of doing business in a free society... the high cost of vanity and greed.

When Jack Daniel Stanley speaks about cost, you must listen and listen closely to understand what he says. Jack speaks in metaphors and in tongues, sometimes both at the same time.

I just left the Fat Monster Studios. The guys have finally started post production. They still have one more shot to shoot but figure they have plenty of time to get it. Tom (tommyinla) just left to take his brother Chris to the airport. Chris did a great job and was a lifesaver. The Macs are smoking as they work on the edit. It's always nice to see Bullis. Zach's leaving tomorrow and by now Kyle and Tony are back in the land of corn.

Yes, indeed, we be smoking now (and also working occasionally on the short). Gotta say how much we appreciate Blaine. The man has the best sandbags in town ... and a few fine ideas to go with them. Tommy and his brother are princes of the realm and we are all blown away by their performances.

I'm writng this at 4:30 a.m. amidst prodigous numbers of Tecate cans and Stella Artois bottles. Its been a long night with more than a few instances of sorting through chicken entrails and consulting the tarot deck to figure out how to cut around the coverage that Tim didn't get (yes, it was all Tim's fault as he kept shouting 'we'll get it in post' in spite of my pleading and begging to the contrary.)

We miss Kyle and Tony and have to give Zach up in a couple hours. And just as we were spitting in Murphy's face he dropped a forensic shoot on us that has to be done as soon as we drop Zach at the airport. So, Tim and I will drag the ever faithful Bullis to the San Pedro docks where we get to shoot tugboats and some sort of injury to a longshoreman. If we get lucky we'll be back here by 1:00 to crank up the Macs again. In spite of the deadline looming we are having a ball. Hope all of you are too.

This is your doctor, Mr. Johnson, signing off and drifting off again In Extremis.

And how about that Tom. Getting his hair cut to match his brother's. All for the sake of his art...

Last time I saw my brother, his hair was half-way down his back! When I picked him up at the airport I hardly recognized him! And we look a lot alike...

I can't say enough about family and getting a chance to visit with them... it just makes things seem much better then they (probably) are...

home!

home!

Tony and I had to deal with a very irritating and poorly handled delay thanks to US Airways...

Jessie dropped us off at the Ontario airport where we boarded a flight that was to depart at 12:35. After waiting on the plane for about twenty minutes we were informed of a mechanical error in the aircraft and that we'd be in the air within 15 minutes if we could all hang tight. Two hours go by, and we were still on the ground. They let us go inside the terminal to wait. Eventually they brought another aircraft to the adjacent gate and told us to board it. Total time that we lost? 5 hours!

We got to KCI around 12:30am and hopped in the sebring. After a three hour drive I was in bed, asleep. All in all, not too bad, since we had Tony's Rockapella CD.... we used to sing in a show choir together in high school and swore by that stuff. Good times.

Anyways, we both had a blast out there and really wish that we could have stayed longer. If school hadn't started back up from break on Wednesday I can guarantee we would still be out there.

Mark - Thanks, as usual, for everything. Theres no one quite like you man. I've learned a lot about filmmaking and about the world from you. I especially like your new digs... although your old place still kicked ass. I'll never forget Edna Rays!

Tim - That's wack-turtle. Let's party in the hills next time.

Blaine - I don't care what you say... Wes Anderson will someday rule the world. Great movie, too, man.

Tommy - Great job, man. You've got talent. You've also got a nice car. Chilis was great, man! SOUTH AFRICA!

Eh, this is getting lengthy. -- I had a blast out there. I'm sure we'll do it again soon. Now I'm off to brave the freezing cold winter snows of Nebraska.
Until next time...
