Real Film Discussion - Recommend Stuff

OK, So I was going through Blockbuster last night dropping off a film and getting Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original special edition, wanted to watch directors commentary track) and it got me thinking, a lot of us have these massive DVD collections. I have over 300 of them and hardly ever watch any of the ones I own. I go to the video store and wander around aimlessly not finding anything that catches my attention. I have my NetFlix list and almost everything in there are films that I have already seen.

So let's just have a thread where everyone suggests a couple of films that they enjoy. It doesn't matter if its as bad as Clerks or as brilliant as Munich (or The Devil's Rejects). What about just a thread of a bunch of movie fans suggesting stuff to watch?

The Return of the Living Dead.

Accept it for what it is; turn it up into Sorround Sound, turn out the lights and enjoy. Good times.

One of my most favorite movies is City of God by Fernando Meirelles. It has a interesting story and comes across as so genuine and real. I love the style and have seen it multiple times. I've almost gone as far to learn Portugese so I could watch it in it's native language.

If you're in the mood for a documentray, Born Into Brothels is a really good movie that is a true testament to the artist in us all and the human element abroad. I believe it was shot on DVX's as well, but I'm not sure.

I've been meaning to find some time to go back to the 80's.

The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Pretty in Pink
Better off Dead
One Crazy Summer
St. Elmo's Fire
Say Anything

I need to take a day off work, send the wife and kids to the Zoo, and hang out with the Brat Pack for a while....

That surprises from you; cool.

I picked up a 3 disc '16 Candles, Breakfast Club and WeIrd Science' a few months ago.

Better OFf Dead is great; what about the John Cusack "Hot Pursuit"?

Escape to Victory - Michael Caine, Sly Stallone, Pele and others in a soccer movie set in World war 2. Strange idea, but it was compelling. I'm going to get this out again soon.

Army Of Darkness (Evil Dead III) - I think everyone knows this guy

The Day The Earth Stood Still - classic 50's (I think) sci fi.

The Fly (Original) - Freaked me out

I don't think I've ever seen a John Cusack film I didn't like ... but then again I haven't seen Must Love Dogs. :undecided

I carry a contingency list of directors in my head when I'm in the videostore. I find this is less constraining than a list of individual films. Any of the classic directors will do, Hitchcock, Tarkovsky(if you can find him), Kurosawa, etc.

As far as films that I will fall back on and watch about once a year;
Full Metal Jacket
12 Monkeys
Usual Suspects
Stalker
Night of the Living Dead(I have a Super8 sound print that I project every Oct.31=fun)

I was in the videostore last week having the same problem, and frustrated, I went to the bookstore instead and bought "I Am Legend." I'm 33, and I can't figure out how in holy hell this book flew under my radar for so long. What a treat. :)

To chime in, my two favorite classic (in relative terms) horror films:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Political Thriller
The Parallax View
The Manchurian Candidate (original)

my taste in film is that i basically have no taste. i dig stuff from opposite ends of the spectrum. its the films that play safely (and blandly) in the middle somewhere that i usually don't like, you know?

and regarding ROTLD, i wanted to quote another line, but couldn't remember it exactly. what does that guy say when the chick starts dancing naked on the grave? something like, "Hey that girl's taking her clothes off!" in context, it just cracks me up.

Getting back to the 80s, everyone MUST see Three O'Clock High. Great, great high school 80s flick. Phil Jonou's first feature (I think) as director. Pacing, editing, story, humor, acting, visual style--all fantastic.

I recommend Elephant too although it's not an 80s flick but the anniversary of the Columbine shooting is this week so definitely a film worth watching.

Lenny
Cabaret
The Bicycle Thief
The Devils (not on dvd yet except as a bootleg import)
King of Comedy
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Death and the Maiden

"Hey get some light over here; Slash is taking off her clothes again!"

One of my favortie lines:

Burt Wilson: I thought you said that if we destroyed the brain, it would die.
Frank: Well, it worked in the movie.
Burt Wilson: Well, it ain't working now.
Freddy: You mean the movie lied?

Not a horror fan so to speak, but I do like the Hellraiser movies, particulary I and II.
-The Dirty Dozen
-The Great Escape
-Force 10 From Navarone
-Das Boot (the best sub movie ever)
-Dark City
-Spiderman I,II and in the future III
-LOTR (all three)
-First Blood
-Blade
-Uncommon Valor

-I'll end at this time with two of my favorite comedies
--Other Peoples Money (just like it)
--Fast Times At Ridgemont High (over and over and over......)

Have any of you all seen The Castle? It's a hillarious off-beat comedy from Australia... it's awesome... highly recommended for some laughs.
