MONITOR FOR HVX200 - what's your favorite one?

I will be buying the HVX200 & Letus Extreme 35 mm adapter and want to get a decent monitor to mount on the camera itself to help me with critical focus.

What monitor, under $1000, would you recommend I get and why?

Called B&H and they have Ikan $750 (on HUGE back order) and Marshall $1,400(costs twice as much as Ikan).

I suspect that I will NOT want a monitor that is not high def - because of critical focus issues with 35mm adapter.

The good news is I do not need a flip monitor since Letus does not flip the image upside down. :).

Since I will be shooting stock footage "on the run" on and off, I prefer a monitor that is lightweight and not too bulky, that I can mount on the camera if need be. Must be at least 7".

Thank you for your input and guidance!

I doubt very much that you would be able to shoot "on the run" with an adapter, lense, and monitor loaded up on the HVX.

yeah, the letus is a pretty meaty setup - "on the run" is gonna be some effort...

from the criteria you mentioned, the IKAN is the ONLY HD option under $1000. i have it and it works great.
if youre gonna shoot with an adapter, lens, and monitor, etc - i would STRONGLY suggest getting a zacuto shoulder mount/rails/arm setup.

thats all gonna be bulky as HELL

BT-LH80W 7.9" monitor. Panasonic monitor and the Marshall are great. I have the Marshall and wish I would have bought the Panasonic beuase it runs off the same batteries as the camera.

Don't go with the IKAN or the LIILPOP, you need either the Marshall 7.5 or the BT-LH80W 7.9" monitor.

nothing that gonzoish mentions is anywhere near "under $1000"

i have the IKAN and its FINE. great for HD focus (search the forum here and see my pics of it in action) sure it has its pros and cons. but hell, its half the price of a marshall/panasonic/nebtek - what do you want?

Yes that Panasonic looks nice but the price is not possible. So it's gonna have to be between Marshall and Ikan.

I did like the Panasonic feature described as : "Outline turns red when critical focus has been achieved"

Do the other two have a feature like this to help nail focus?

PS: When I am running and gunning at drag races I will not use the adapter, but the monitor might be good to have to help framing and focus. Honestly I use tripod a lot when filming hotrods in motion, works well for me, so weight should not be a big issue.

The panasonic btlh80W sadly doesnt run off Panny batteries. It comes with a Anton Bauer DC in or a 4-pin XLR dc in.
I think I remember someone saying the panny batteries arent capable of powering the monitor, but don't quote me on that part.

Its a sweet monitor in any case if you can swallow the cost.

Nebtek has a new monitor that is in the same league with a Panny battery mount available, but also in the same price ballpark.

I , as others, prefer the Totevision HD 7", it is LED backlit and beats the Marshall picture wise (from my comparisons...)
Still under 1K...

has any one used the LCD4Video 7” TFT LCD Monitor
it's only $169

Seems like a nice little package for $169, but that's what worries me. If you can provide all these accessories AND the screen for $169, then how good can the screen really be? Seems way too low for me and I do abide by the philosophy that you do get what you pay for (unless paying for brand name that is).

At that price I wonder if the whole thing will fall apart after a few shoots... Is it "Made in Taiwan?" LOL??

the resolution on that screen is no good - 480 x 240. I dont know that you could even use it to focus SD reliably. I'm in the same boat as far as costs go deuce - the front runner for me looks like the totevision. still havent pulled the trigger on that though.

Boy that is one misleading set of specs they have for that thing. It's billed as "High Definition", but has no component video input, lists a resolution of 1400x240, but "480x240 lines", and so on.

After you parse the data, what you've got is what you'd expect for $169: a lowball, SD mini-montitor. Looks fine for the dirt-cheap price if that's the sort of thing you're looking for, but it's definitely not what we're talking about in this thread.

Without focus assist, focusing wide angle shots below 40mm becomes a huge challenge. At 24mm, the Marshall is almost useless unless there is significant separation between your subject and background, there just aren't enough pixels in the display. If you're going to shoot outside a lot, you absolutely will need a good hood, as all these monitors are pathetic in bright conditions.

Unless you're not very picky about how sharp your footage is, you will eventually realize that HD 35mm adapter shooting requires a monitor like Bruce Allens with lots of pixels, or focus assist like the Panasonic and Nebtek.

Personally, the NEB70HD with the trans-reflective display is the only way to go.

Hey Faith,

Never got your call. you must be busy.

But if you can wait 2 weeks, I'm placing the order for all the items for my monitor. web site up shortly. it will only be $1250 introductory price (without the HD-SDI which you don't need now anyway. and I will have an option to upgrade to it later on)

We just purchased the Panasonic 8" and we love it. We were looking at the Ikan and Marshall, but we heard the Ikan was soldered poorly and was susceptible to easy damage if roughed up a bit. We had strongly considered going with it, but our dealer successfully talked us into the Panny, but we are sure we made the right choice.

We previously had a SONY DSR 300 but it broke about two months ago (which is why we now own an HVX :) but we have a bunch of Vmount Batteries left over from it. When we got the Panny we got the adapter plate so now we can use all our Vmount batteries with the screen.

We also just got our Letus35 extreme today, and it makes us VERY VERY happy to have that red line focus feature. Using the adapter is a different beast but so far we are happy with our decisions.

If you want a screen for under 1K, you're only choice is pretty much Ikan. If you can drum up the cash though I would really recommend either the Marshal or the Panny.

Sorry, but there are still the SWIT/Varizoom (not good though, tested it and didn´t like it...) and the Totevision 7"HD.
I compared it side to side with the Marshall and the Totevision had the better picture IMHO (and that of 5 other crewmembers...)
Not saying anything against the Ikan, havn´t used it.
But under 1K, there ARE other alternatives.
