Eviction Day - Apple Insomnia Fest entry

Here's my movie for Apple's Insomnia Fest.

It's called Eviction Day and it was shot entirely with a Nikon D80 DSLR. I also used a Time-Lapse controller from PClix . It's also viewable in HD via Viemo.

A little back story on Eviction Day: I originally signed up for Insomnia Fest when I saw a post about it in The Cafe. That was about 3 weeks prior to the actual start of the fest. In the mean time, my Girlfriend's neighbor's apartment flooded which, in turn, flooded her apartment. She was offered a hefty sum of money to get out of the apartment by Oct. 13th... Which just happened to be the start of the festival.

I suppose I should have shrugged my shoulders and said "Ok, I guess I'll just have to enter the festival next year and hope no "incidents" prevent me from participating again." However, I decided to combine the two things (Moving and Filmmaking) into one gloriously fun-filled day! Hence, Eviction Day was born. It was a whole lot of fun to make and everyone had a surprisingly good time. I've already seen a ton of entries from other DVXusers and they're all looking great. I'm looking forward to participating next year. Thanks for watching, and if you feel it's warranted, I'd appreciate a rating on the Film's Apple Insomnia Fest page. :cheesy:

Looks great man. I'm impressed - you actually packed, moved, unpacked, all while taking pictures and you were still awake enough to edit?

VERY impressive.

Thanks for the complements. The cool thing about having a whole project of just digital images is that it takes very little time to import and start editing them. Our workflow involved grabbing whoever wasn't moving boxes/furniture at the time and sending them to my house to offload the stills from two 1 GB SD cards onto my computer, throw those into FCP and render them into QT files for editing later that evening. By the time we finished moving in, it was just a matter of assembling the edit and finding suitable music. Another nice thing about this kind of shooting, it's practically a 1:1 ratio of shooting, so I didn't really have to sort out footage I didnt need. =)

That is very ironic about the flooding, but hey, sometimes bad things benefit others. I really dig the concept of an entire short composed of still photos, especially time-lapsed, which regardless of what it is showing, always impresses me.

Great Job!

Thanks. It was a ton of fun and it proved (to me anyway) the viability of shooting a longer movie with this method.

Great fun. Loved the motion-blur effect during the timelapse. It really looks like you guys were moving fast. Can I do this stuff with any digital camera? I have a Powershot A80.

You can do this kind of movie with just about any digital camera. The only key ingredients are: A tripod and a remote control shutter release.

The tripod is essential because you're pretty much just doing animation with real life people and things. (Called "pixelation") So, you want that camera to be stable. A good example of how a non stabilized movie can be is one of the insomnia fest entries about a slinky. I don't remember the name, but you should be able to find it with a "Slinky" search on the Apple site.

The other important element is the remote shutter release. This again goes back to the fact that you don't want the camera jittering during filming. You can get away without a remote control, but you just need to be really careful not to bump the camera when you depress the shutter button.

For Eviction Day, we used a timelapse module that automatically clicked off exposures at certian intervals. That saved a lot of time and effort on my part as the cameraman.

Thanks, I'm glad it's being so well received. It makes the complete lack of sleep I got for 34 hours totally worth it... (I went back and spent 10 more hours finishing the move-in process immediately after uploading the movie to Apple =)
