when i have the iris open and zoom in to get a shallower depth of field, as i zoom in, the iris closes. Why can't i have the iris open at f1.6 while i am zoomed in?

That's the nature of lenses. Most film and video lenses lose light as you telephoto.

Generally it's higher price lenses that don't lose light as you telephoto. I believe the XL-H1 lens maintains the same aperture through the entire range, but I might be mistaken.

If you had a 20x zoom lens that maintained its aperture optically it would be huge and quite expensive.

That's why they lose light.

The 16x manual does that, but not the zoom lense that comes with the H1.

And to be a fair, although it isn't exactly a terrific lens, most lenses including expensive ones narrow the iris upon zooming.

it shouldn't be that bad, I zoom in completely when I shoot on sunday mornings at my church and from full wide to full zoom I only go from 1.6 to 3.4 or so....its a loss of light but the lens doesn't close that much.
