XHA1 and Letus Extreme

You can't really lock focus on the Canon. Just keep your fingers and hands away from it or you can tape it down with gaffer's tape. What I do is get the perfect focus and zoom settings (remember you have to zoom until the "mini screen" covers your LCD screen) and then I use the zoom and focus presets to set where they are. Before each significant shot, I engage the button for focus and zoom to make sure nothing moved. This way, you can recall these settings instantly. make sense?

Makes perfect sense. Thank you.
I had read the canon manual in and out ... thought I had missed the lock focus part. Thanks for clarifying.

Yep, and after every setup, this routine should just become part of "checking the gate."

I was just wondering if you could tell me exactly which Nikon lenses you used. And those shots are just beautiful, awesome job.

ECUs were shot with a Nikon 100mm f2.8 lens. Mediums were with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 and wide shots with a Nikon 28mm f2.8

Thanks for the comments.

I hear Nikons are substantially more expensive than Canon lenses though.

Hi Disjecta, could you post a picture of your rig. my A1 is coming tomorrow!! (I own a Letus Econ, I'm considering which rails, ff, support, shoulder support to invest in)

Best regards!

sorry for the major bump but I'm a proud owner of a canon xh-a1 but have been using default equipment for the past few months. only now am I considering investing in some extra equipment and I've got some questions - be easy on me, I'm a film major but I'm still learning the nuances of such a wonderful camera.

first, I'm really interested in picking up a 35mm adapter for the xh-a1 and so far from what I can tell the letus35 extreme seems like a good purchase. the test footage I've seen from the xh-a1 with a letus35 extreme is beautiful. so, do I just purchase this straight up? so many of the threads I've read have mentioned using the letus35 extreme conjunction with another lens - but I don't have any extra lenses aside from the standard one that came with the xh-a1. is that a problem? do I need to purchase another lens to use with the adapter or is the standard one fine?

second, I don't know what mounting system the canon xh-a1 uses....on letusdirect.com I've got options to purchase the letus35 extreme with a canon fd lens mount or a improved canon ef lens mount. which does the xh-a1 model use? what's the difference between fd lens mounts and ef lens mounts?

A 35mm adapter is just that, an adapter. It allows you to mount SLR or cinema lenses to the camera and thus achieve a shallow DOF; you will still need to buy the lenses. The stock lens is used only to record the image that these SLR lenses generate. There are many types of lenses available depending on your taste, each with different lens mount. The Canon FD line are discontinued lenses for film cameras; Canon EF is what is being used now for Canon DSLR. Many people use Nikon. If they can afford to they'll use PL mounts for cinema style lenses.

I would highly recommend you head over to the 35mm adapter section and spend some time reading the stickies and some of the topics there. A 35mm adapter is not a pick-up-and-go instrument. It's a serious financial commitment that will completely change how you approach shooting in the field. Not only will you need an adapter and a set of lenses, a rod system and eventually a follow focus unit will be mandatory. Not sure what a follow focus is? Head over to the 35mm adapter section and you'll find out why it's so important!

From one film student to another: If you're going to drop $1,200 on the adapter, be prepared to spend double that on a barebones rig...not to mention a much, much better tripod.

I spent about a month of lurking in the 35mm adapter section before even considering the purchase.
