30p to 24p conversion

did a shoot recently with 3 HVX shooters, one listened and shot in 30Pn, the others shot in 24Pn. Most of the footage is now in 24p, so I'd like to convert the 30p footage down.

What is the best way to do so? Preferably in a batch process (lots of 30p footage).

thanks in advance.

Mac.

I have FCP 5.0.4, After Effects, Magic Bullet 2.1, Cleaner 6, Squeeze 4.1, Compressor, Cine-Tools.

I'm sure one of these will do it, but never have been faced with footage shot in different frame rates that I have to edit together, I've never looked into the capabilities of the programs to do so. Its been pretty easy so far, set up timeline to match footage, edit, export, done.

This one is a little different.

also, willing to invest in software to make it work if needs be. if there is product that does this easy/well I'd buy it.

one listened and shot in 30Pn.

I'm not sure what this means... listened to what? instructions?

30p -> 24p and 24p->30p are some of the ugliest conversions to make. If possible, and most of your footage is 30p rather than 24p, then you may want to go the 30p route unless you're going to film. What's your final delivery format?

most of the footage the footage is in 24p, so I need to pull the 30p down.

final delivery will be on a SD DVD.

You should do some testing - it's possible in this case that 60i would be the best way to go (that is, yield the smoothest result)....

great... which leads me back to my original question... HOW ?

Twixtor (plugin for after effects) and a lot of animated mattes to block out background distortion. If it's too much to handle some post houses (like DVFilm.com) can also do it for you as a service either with Twixtor or with some other type of hardware motion-vector type frame-rate conversion box.

Again, a little testing is key... but I'd start with a 60p timeline, then export to 60i SD as the final stage...

If you have lots of 30p you need to edit in a 29.97 timeline. 30p to 24p looks nasty and won't match. 24p to 29.97 will look fine. Author your DVD at 29.97 as well.

Let me clear this up a little...

I'm looking for a way to convert the files from one frame rate to another... BEFORE they get dropped into a time line so that there is no rendering required in FCP.

That is perfectly clear. What we are saying, is that you cannot do a good conversion of 30P to 24P. If you want to convert all your 24P to 29.97 and edit in a 29.97 timeline, everything will look fine and need no rendering.

I'd upgrade to FCP 6 and do in a multi-format timeline. This converting of all of the raw takes will take forever and not even look that great. Sorry to say but this is a bit of a royal cluster-f from your shooters who didn't listen.
