If 32gig cards were $200 how many would you buy?

I'd get no more than 4. I can't imagine shooting more than 2.5 hours of 1080 footage or 5 hours of 720 footage in one day (although I'm talking narrative film here). And I can still have a PA unload to a laptop once or twice a day if I run out of space. 4 cards, even at 8GB, is a luxury.

10 cards? Really? Even if they were that cheap (although you're still talking about dropping $2,000) that would be unnecessary overkill.

i would buy 2. and then i would buy some chips and salsa.. and possibly some sort of garden variety vegitable to go into the salsa for extra flavor. because according to the laws of physics, i think that would be the best avenue to take.

I would buy 1,000 and put them all on ebay and sell them to all those people that are paying the 25% markup on them...then I would take that money and buy a couple of Red Ones :D

A max of four per camera. Likely 3. I wouldn't buy more, just b/c they were cheaper. I'd just save money, and put it towards something else:)

If they were $100, I'd buy 12. I often shoot more or less 6 hours straight, and that would cover me for 1080p... of course, if they were $5 or even $10 each, I'd use 'em for backup. You know... just in case I need the original footage. If they were $.10, I'd use 'em for business cards.

If they were $1 I'd probably still only get 4 of them. Of course Panasonic would go out of business and that wouldn't be good for us now would it? :)

I just don't see much of a need to use it as a disposable media... Though, if the option were there, *maybe* I wouldn't think that way. With the size cards that are coming in short order, and what is projected over the next couple of years, there isn't need for it to be used as such.

What is terribly lagging, in my opinion, are affordable, reliable, long-term archival/storage solutions. But, that is slowly coming around, and will have to now that other players are entering the solid state market, and the market on the whole will likely (as indicated long ago) move in that direction entirely. Probably the high end market with things like p2, sxs, etc. And, the lower end with things like SD and CF.

Anyways, what I want, is affordable, and rock solid archival solutions. That's where the lag is imo.

uhhh... let's see. if a $1600 product were available for ONE EIGHTH of it's current retail value:

a. i'd pinch myself to see if i were dreaming
b. i'd look around for the hidden camera or the undercover customs officer
c. i'd wonder if i had to by a beachfront timeshare to get that price
d. providing that neither a, b nor c from above were the case - ID BUY EVERY FREAKING ONE THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THAT PRICE!!! and start a 32g p2 card business!!!

what kind of question is this?!?!??!?!

uh... i'd buy 4

whatever?

Well that is only if u would own multiple hvx and want to shoot with all. U dont need that many cards for one cam.

Reading this thread I can really see the problem that Panasonic have with P2..... there IS a finite P2 size. Let me explain... with HDD if you had 100TB drives people would still want more but with P2 after around 64GB the offload times become an issue and also the vast majority of people just don't need that much recording time.

For me I reckon my needs for the HVX will be met with 2x32gb cards if they bring out a decent sized P2 store at a reasonable price then I MIGHT consider 2x64GB but 128gb cards and 2 hour offload times.... no way!

I think that P2 will only grow in size through new unrealeased hardware using higher resolutions say 4k i.e. Panansonic's RED 'killer' due at NAB '08 priced at under $10k ;)

Indy... In Starbucks, Lima, Peru!

I can totally see Indy's point.

Last year when I got a digital camera for the first time, the 512MB CF card I had for it was rather restricting.

Now I have a 2GB card that lives in it. I'm sure some day it'll run out, but I don't expect it beeing any time soon. And I dread the day that I need to offload that 2GB card in a hurry.

If 16GB P2 cards came free in boxes of Lucky Charms...how many boxes would you buy?**

**Of course boxes of Lucky Charms will now cost roughly $905.95 each**

People are ridiculing this notion, since those card won't be that cheap for a decade, but I think the point of the exercise were "if price were no issue, how many would you buy?"

Meaning, how many do you need?

If price were truly no issue (meaning, they were $5 apiece) then I'd buy hundreds. Not all at once, but at that commodity pricing why not use 'em as footage and archival all at once?

But as long as there are other, cheaper archive options, the question becomes how many do you need to do what you do? For Ullanta, shooting multi-camera operas, he needs a lot more than someone who shoots TV commercials. For a TV commercial, one card is all you'd likely ever need. Why buy more, when you'd never ever use it? With four 32GB cards in an HPX500, you're talking about over two hours of 1080, or almost six hours of 720/24pN, in-camera with no offloading. Can't think of too many shooting situations that would need more than six hours of storage in any one day, so why buy more than you need and could reasonably use?

(Of course, this coming from the guy who still has two 4GB cards...)
