Shooting 720PN - Delivering 1080i? - serarched didn't find clear answer

I have searched, but didn't find what I needed.

Due to the nature of the project, we need to shoot efficiently (in terms of data) so we have opted to shoot 720PN to a wack of P2 cards. (no time for laptop transfer in the feild, and don't want to use firestoe)

My question is, if I edited in FCP 5.1.4, can I stick with 720PN on the time lone, and then after a fine cut is done I'll do the 3:2 pull down, but what is the best way to out put 1080i?
Ultimately, I need to deliver to the network that way.

thanks

If you shoot 720pN there are no frames for pulldown since all of those frames are removed at recording. That's why you get 2.5 times the recording time on a P2 card. When you ingest into FCP, uncheck the remove duplicate frames. You are much better off upgrading to FCP 6 since it handles P2 footage better.

I would output through a Kona 3 card which can uprez to 1080 in real time directly to HDCAM deck. I presume the network wants HDCAM or D5 master anyway.

I second Ned's comments about uprezzing through a Kona 3. That's my workflow and works very well. No hitches or glitches. But, typically if I am delivering 1080 I shoot 1080 to avoid the whole uprez step.

thanks for the quick reply.
I am not experienced with post on HD, so bare with me...

Is there a more detailed tutorial about working with 720PN I can read?

I thought it was as simple as making a 720/24P time line (which is essentially what 720PN is right?), cutting the footage as is, and then later adding the pulll down at the same time as doing the upres - I know a local facility with an FCP suite and a kona, so maybe I can pull a favor for that last step.
upgrading to FCP6 is not an option for me right now... if it is that much better for what I am trying to do, maybe I'll try to borrow a friend's system to post this - or could I do a low res offline on my FCP 5.1.4 system?

thanks for any furtehr help.
I am relieved that people aren't telling me I am insane for planning it this way - the train has sort of left the station for this production... so it would be hard to try and switch to shooting a different format now.

Hi all:

If I am not mistaken, if you shoot progressive, then the K3 can only output progressive so it would be 1080 24P over 1080 60i technically, right? Have never tried this but it could come up on some pilots I am doing.

Thanks,

Dan

HI, Dan

Yes. It would technically be 1080 24p over 60i. But I cannot see any reason why you could not record directly to HDCAM deck.
