Outputting DVCPRO HD to HDCAM?

Hello,

Hope all is well. I have a feature film, that i have to eventually output to Sony HDCAM. The 90 minute film was shot on the HVX200 on an AVID XPress PC computer. The footage was stored and edited on eSata drives. The only output i have is from the computer via a firewire.

My outputted project must have a stereo mix on channels 1 and 2 and music effects only on 3 and 4. I can't rent a Sony HDCAM deck, because the inputs are only analog in (with the exception of the HDW-1800, but the firewire input is HDV only). I have outputted an HDV version of the film, but would like to have the DVCPRO HD quality on Sony HDCAM.

The only way i can see not to loose quality is to rent a Panasonic AJ HD1200A deck which has a firewire input. I would then output on my computer to the AJ HD 1200A deck. Once the tape is outputted transfer the DVCPRO HD tape to Sony HDCAM at a duplication house. Then i would have to dub the tape again with audio insert only creating a separate stereo (Music and Effects only) on channels 3 and 4 on the HDCAM master.

Basically what is the cheapest and easiest way to output to Sony HDCAM from a DVCPro hd project that can only be outputted via firewire. So far this looks to run me at least $800 with the DVCPro HD rental and the HDCAM transfer. Anyone have any cheaper suggestions (without losing quality). Also can Panasonic DVCPro HD tapes record 90 minutes of HD material? Some of the tape specs look strange to me and are not clear. Do i have to record on two separate panasonic tapes? Any recommendations on a cheap output to Sony HDCAM.

thanx,

Omar

Short of renting the HD1200A, your best bet might be to find a post house that can lay it off to tape for you.
As long as they have an AVID system and you can take all your media and project file on an external drive - shouldn't be a problem.

That's my first thought.

Yeah, I have looked into that. The only problem is many of these editing houses in New York City (that offer HDCAM tape ouputs) are Final Cut based and/or don't have eSata slots/cards on their systems. In general many editing houses that i have contacted are Mac based as well. Annnnnnnd the price still is around $800 and up. Ugh.

Do you or anyone know of an relatively inexpensive video card that I can output analog HD? Therefore i could just rent an Sony HDCAM deck once and have the audio situation fixed at a post house by having them dub the audio via a DA88 tape deck etc.

Would something like this work?

Panasonic ships new AG-HPG10 'P2 Gear'-
Panasonic announced the immediate availability of the AG-HPG10, a rugged, highly affordable P2 solid-state high-definition/standard-definition video viewer/recorder. Dubbed the P2 Gear, the 1.1-pound, battery-operated AG-HPG10 provides a host of functions to support P2 workflow in the field as well as within video production facilities, including P2 card playback, transfer and recording, uncompressed HD-SDI transfer, clip file and metadata management, and data back up onto USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 equipped hard drives.

It supports downconversion from HD (1080 or 720) to SD (480) and cross-conversion (720 to 1080) for HD transmission.

The P2 Gear is equipped with two industry standard high-speed data transfer interfaces, IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0, for transferring content to a PC- or Mac-based nonlinear editor or FireWire-equipped DV/DVCPRO/HD tape deck. The HD-SDI output allows playback to a larger HD production monitor or uncompressed content transfer to HD-SDI equipped decks, post production systems and storage networks. For added flexibility, the P2 Gear can record from IEEE 1394-equipped DV/ DVCPRO/ DVCPROHD camcorders and decks. P2 cards can also be “hot-swapped” for continuous recording.

Mmmmmmmmmmm doesn't look like it. It only supports p2 cards which are small. I would have better luck going to an external hard drive etc. I just am wrestling with how to output from AVid and import on a mac final cut pro. Best suggestions without losing quality?
