Shoot Starts Sunday - Help Me With My Idiot Check

Ok. I think I know what we're doing. We've been prepping for a couple of months. I've got two DVXs, 6 batteries and 55 tapes of Panasonic PQ and we're going to make a movie! I've got some last minute concerns, though, so here goes. If I'm not mentioning something else, please throw it out there.

24P or 24P ADV. I don't know who is editing this and on what. How prevalent are 24 frames timelines in NLEs?

Time Code. I was going to use free run and try and keep the two cameras in sync. I figure why not? I can match them by doing a sync but I don't know how to reset the free run. I'd like to have each new tape start on the hour, with Tape 1 being 1:00:00:00, Tape 2 being 2:00:00:00, etc... Does anyone know what I mean by this or is it even worth the effort? I'm no editor, but I'm just trying to keep it organized.

As an aside, the manual states clearly that you shouldn't connect the firewire with the cameras on or unless they're grounded. Is this for real?

Aspect ratio. Letterbox, that was settled by BG's book.

Backing up. I'm going to back up to my miniDV camcorder at the end of the day. I've tested it and it works fine and captures the timecode. Pretty straightforward.

Any other suggestions or horror stories?

dont really get the point of this post...but have you though about lighting and audio equipment?

Shoot 24pA, it looks good on big screen.
I shoot SQUEEZE, 16:9...That's personal preference though...
I just got a RODE NTG-2 for audio. It works nice so far, and I'm going to be using it for some new shorts.
And yes, do use a crappy old camera to capture your footage, to reduce wear and tear on your DVX. A capture deck is fine, but a lot of money.

Lighting? Im with ya bro, I don't got anything ecept for a 100 watt lamp, and a 500 watt work light.

Lighting, Audio is key to making a good, filmlike movie.

24p and 24pA will look the same on any screen. The only difference is how it is handled in post. Ask your editor if they want to edit on a 24p or a 60i timeline. If 24p, then shoot 24pA. If 60i, shoot regular 24p.

I disagree with shooting letterbox in camera. I'd suggest masking for the intended aspect ratio and shooting 4:3. Later in post, you apply your 1:85:1 and have total control over the frame.

I would ask you guys, Whats the difference on editing on a 60i timeline as opposed to a 24p timeline, but ill try the search function given to me at the top of the page:)

I know, but I still don't know what the difference is. What makes one better than the other...But I didn't find anything on the search

You'll soon realize there are very few things that are "better" than others.
They are all different workflows, and have their different uses.

Shouldn't the period go AFTER the (") ?

Traditionally, no it should not.
But it's becoming more common to put punctuation outside of the quotation marks.
Personally, I still prefer the way they look inside (and Strunk & White agree).

At least, I think they do.

EDITED TO ADD:
I don't want to hijack Markyf's thread here.

Prediction: In 1 year TheComo will be a moderator with a title of "Grammar police".

Regarding punctuation and quotations: It depends on how it is being used. If you are quoting somebody, the punctuation goes inside of the end quotation mark. If you are emphasizing a word or putting quotations around a proper noun, then the punctuation normally goes outside of the end quotation mark.

The most common grammar error (from what I have seen) is the differentiation between "its" and "it's".

Apologies for further "hijackation".
