What is going on with everbody's 16gig P2's?

I've read a bunch of posts on here about the 16's not working right or working good in the beginning then all of a sudden kaput! I may purchase one soon, but with all these stories going around I am afraid to drop 900 bucks on a new card. What is going on with all the problems? Are they confined to just MAC users or PC users or BOTH?

I haven't had any problems up till this point and I hope the things your are hearing don't cure me. I have two 16gb cards that I transfer w/ a PC laptop to external hard drives that I plug into my Mac w/ FCP. No issues to date, but I'd like to know more about what your hearing just in case.

Nobody's afraid of answering it, but part of the problem is finding out what the issue is and when it occurs. I believe that I can answer what all the "DIRECTORY NG" and "FORMAT ERR" problems are: they're user error, caused by Mac users deleting the CONTENTS directory and LASTCLIP files from their cards. You can't do that.

You used to be able to do that, before the firmware update to 16GB. But with the latest firmware, you can't do that anymore. So Mac users (who cannot format the cards like Windows can) need to learn a new workflow and quit deleting the CONTENTS directory. Instead they need to use P2CMS to select all files and delete from there, or just format the cards in-camera.

as a mac user, i just reformat the card each time i put in back in camera after a dump. does that avoid the problem?

i cant imagine why anyone would do it any other way? just seems the most no-nonsense way to go about things to begin with...

thats why ive never quite understood p2 genie.

just drag the full content of the p2 card to new folder, eject, reinsert to camera, reformat, shoot, done.

Well, you're missing the whole hot-swap workflow for perpetual shooting. That's when you can't reformat in the camera, so reformatting (or erasing) on the computer makes more sense. Or in a P2 Store, etc.

Hi Cache:

If only I had the HVX when I shot my drifting film, life would have been great. Unfortunately, I have moved on from drifting, it took over my life for about two years and I made a cool doc about it but now, I have moved away from it.

Drifting at 60 fps on the HVX would be SWEET, though. Go shoot it!

16GB cards not mounting

16GB cards not mounting

My own particular version of 16GB card troubles begin and end with the cards not mounting on my PowerBook G4 laptop, either in Finder or using P2 Genie. The firmware is updated to 4.06 and the laptop itself is running 10.4.10. So right now, the only way to extract material is from the HVX200 itself via FireWire.

Sigh.

Update the Mac P2 driver. The Mac itself needs an updated driver to handle cards in the slot; once you update the driver you can use 16GB cards in the slot again.

This may not be from the p2 card, but I know when I transfer content folder from my laptop to desktop, in the last couple days I have had a few .mxf files cause an error. something something redundant cycle error

Sounds like your laptop hard drive is failing. If the data is corrupted in the process of copying from the P2 card to the laptop, you'll have bad data but you will not get CRC errors when copying the data off the laptop.

Thanks THoff. It has been a total of 3 files in the last two p2 dumps. all the other footage is fine, but I guess it would be a good time for a new laptop entirely, this thing is terrible.
