First attempt at a short film...

I will give a little bit of background info about myself.

I literally only have a few hours worth of experience with a video camera. I took the plunge a little while ago and bought the XHA1 after owning an XL2 (in which I didn't like the XL2). I only shot a few things with the XHA1 and this is the first short film I have created. I figured I would give you this information to make up for the amateurish short I made so I didn't look all that bad. Hah.

Anyways, here is the link.

Oh and by the way. I created the idea for this short within a minute. None of the shots were planned ahead or anything. It took me about an hour to shoot the whole thing and I edited it in the same day. There was supposed to be a twist to the ending, but I was running out of time. Go easy on me.

Just FYI, when you upload a 400mb file and make a whole bunch of excuses as to why it's probably not worth the download, chances are you won't get much response.

I would suggest you let the film speak for itself and compress it to something under 100mb at least.

Okay, try this:

Go to "RENDER AS" in Vegas (with your movie on the timeline, obviously)
Choose "Quicktime 7" from the SAVE AS TYPE dropdown
Click on the CUSTOM button on the right hand side
Click on the VIDEO tab at the bottom
Choose "Custom frame size" from the FRAME SIZE drop down
Type in the following: Width 540 and Height 304
Make sure FRAME RATE matches that of your movie
In PIXEL ASPECT RATIO, choose 1.000
VIDEO FORMAT: Try "Sorenson Video 3" (you can experiment with whatever one works for you)

Leave everything else at default.

Try that and see what happens.

I tried downloading it, and then I accidentally closed it while it was still downloading. So, I tried again (because I'm crazy, disregarding it was a huge file) but apparently I reached a bandwidth cap.

So, hopefully disjecta helps out and we can see it.

Yeah, I am down converting the size right now.

Morox,

I managed to download your film. It took awhile, but it worked. (Windows Media will give you good quality with much smaller file sizes.)

I didn't really have much of a story. You originally stated that there was supposed to be some sort of a twist at the end, but you ran out of time. I am going to guess that this guy either killed some and is eating them, or is it supposed to be that he got some meat out of a garabage bag?

Some of the interior shots were very dark, making it hard to see what he was doing. I think that you could have benefited with some lighting equipment on those shots, or even a reflector.

I liked the last shot, of the man eating while the camera does a slow zoom out.

Again, there was really no plot, but not bad for a first effort. You had some nice shots and some that weren't so effective. Keep it up, and try to add some more substance to the next one.

The meat was supposed to be a mystery and at the end, it was supposed to turn out to be just plain beef. I had to minus some shots and if I hadn't of, things would have been more clear.

I knew the indoor shots were going to pose a problem. I actually own a lighting kit but since we didn't have time to set any of it up, I still went with the shot anyways.

I have been working on a short since December. I have some storyboards done and such and the entire concept of the short is complete. I just need to finish the storyboards and start shooting. It's something that I am confident in.

Sounds like you know what you want to do. I think that making quick little practise shorts like the one you just did are great for testing things, getting familiar with new equipment, or just something fun to do. Lately I've been going out and shooting some random footage with the A1, just to see what I can do. I've also thrown together some storyless stuff myself, to test things out and try different editing and output workflows.

I don't have any problems with that short. Seemed shot well.

I think it could have benefited from a little more hints that the meat should not be normal. But if you cut some stuff out, maybe the communication was lost.

Good work, I say. I'd bet you could make something great with more attention.

Thanks! I just need to get my ass in gear and start making the short that I have been planning out for some time.
