My new 16GB p2 is GODLY..

right. Well this is why they never released the cineporter either. Kind of like the buggy whip.. cars come out no need for horses so bye bye to the whip to drive it all along.

The only question and the one that I am really hesistant about going onto the 16gigers is archival and backup. Until blue ray is out and affordable leaving files on HD seems shaky to me. Now I just back up to DVD. it's clean easy and cheap.. what are the alternatives for 16 gig without breaking up into quicktime files or something else.. but keeping the MXF will be tough

Buy an external backup drive. Keep your MXF files and quicktime files on your editing drive, and put it also on an external backup drive. (i got a usb 2.0 500gb WD MyBook, just for computer backups, for like $130 from newegg)

just as a heads up, Zacuto just recieved a shipment of 16gb P2 cards on wednesday, I picked up 2 for myself. Not sure how many they recieved but you should give them a call, Becky was extremely helpful and called me as soon as they became available.

For those who are waiting on cards, now seems like a good time to pounce. VideoScope has 30 in stock (or did earlier today); Zacuto has some, etc. Call around, hopefully the drought is over!

Sorry but for me the FS100 works more than fine...it's such an amazing device and you dont need a Computer on set also...true you cant play back over and under crank...but still with three 16Gb cards you just can't get closer to it's storaging capacity (100Gb)...also for the price of 11/2 cards can buy 3 times capacity...and you record directly to .mov files (imposible to do with cards) and don't need the "ingesting" process, you can edit directly from there!!...
so, where's the disadvantage?

IMHO, recording capacity (and possibly the need not to offload to another device like a P2 Store or laptop) is the only advantage that the FS-100 has.

Aside from that, it has only disadvantages: poor integration with the camera, an unreliable connection, the need for another type of battery as well as a battery that doesn't last for the full recording capacity, and moving parts.

Even recording directly to QuickTime has tradeoffs in that you don't get the P2 metadata.

Ordered (2) 16GB cards last week from Abel CineTech in NY and received the cards already. They told me a shipment of 100 cards just arrived. The cards are definitely more available.

There's an elegance to the P2.. the other is like a brick and it'll bounce like one if it's banged or bumped... but as someone says, it has moving parts and is liable to crap out. I just had one bad experience with it.. and that's enough to never make it seem rock solid...

Besides, with 2 16 gig cards along with the cards I already have. I can use the P2store to import and could write a good solid 500 gig worth of data to the cheap drive.... but again there's still an archival issue. I don't want to keep things on HD for years and years and years. Disks seems so much more practicle but that's not gonna happen... and the rub is that the HD disks don't cost much more to produce than standard DVDs.. but of course they want to rape the consumer out of as much dough as possible.

I've only used it in the house, i'm gonna use it in "the real world" tomorrow, can't wait.

Just found another limitation to the FS-100:

Even with a brand new, fully charged battery, I cannot offload and dump the FS-100 to my laptop unless the FS-100 is plugged into a power outlet. I guess the FS battery isn't powerful enough to maintain the firewire connection to my Dell laptop? It connects and detects the drive but then quickly disappears and I lose the connection unless I physically plug it in with the power adapter.

On another note, is it possible to offload a P2 card onto an FS-100? Could it double as a mobile P2 dump?

That's very strange.
I shoot with an FS-100 and have never had a problem connecting it to a mac laptop to dump the footage, same with my desktop at home - and I've never had to plug the FS-100 in to dump the footage. I've always gone off the Firestore battery (unless of course the battery wasn't charged at all).

I think you might have something else going on there ProjX.

Now that I want to copy my new files to my computer (w/ Windows XP Pro) can I use firewire or do I need to use a USB 2.0 cable?

I think this has to do with the Firewire connection not being 100% reliable for PC/Windows. It's only 100% guaranteed on Mac computers. I'm pretty sure I read this somewhere in a manual.

I had a p2 order in at b&h too. I called abel cine tech and cancelled my b&h order. ACT has them in stock and $125 less. :)

I use the FS100 and P2 cards without any trouble. They both have their place and purpose. I've had longer shoots where the action or interview could not be interrupted and the FS is wonderful. The P2 gives me some creative freedom for OC/UC. I've never had any trouble with my FS and I've done some busy run & gun. Do I like the P2 more? Yes, less weight. And we'll get more in stock.

But, as a FS user I'll stick up for them. They've made me some great money and produced very nice footage.
