FW Host: can i partition the hard disk?

someday

Hi to all,
i ordered an hard disk (Lacie) to connect it to the HVX200 in host mode. As i have to format it for the HVX, is is possible to use half hard disk for the HVX and the other partition as usual for computer use (Mac)?

No.

When you use the camera to offload P2 cards to a SBP2-compatible hard drive, it will create one partition for each offloading operation. The camera will control the drive partitioning.

Exactly, which means that you *only* want to use that hard drive for offloading. Only use a drive that you can dedicate to that purpose.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your precious help.
This means that once i connect that HD filled with P2 footage to my Mac, FCP will see it as a bunch of P2s?

Currently you can't use more than 15 x 16 = 240GB of that drive.

That's because the P2 cards are currently limited to 16GB each, and you cannot have more than 15 partitions on the drive.

Hey Barry, THoff:

What if you don't partition or format a drive? Here's my story:

I rented some cards, did the frame rate hack, shot some timelapse at 720/24pn.

I have an external Seagate drive that I dumped the contents of the P2 card to (after installing the software/drivers that came with my camera). I believe the process was what B.Green describes on page 196 of his book, using the USB cable to offload.

This was quite awhile ago, and I finally upgraded my system to Avid 5.7.2, so now I can edit HD footage. I open a new project, 720p 23.976, but I can't import MXF clips from my external drive.

I read the sticky at the top of the Avid forum, and I was missing the folder called, "Avid MediaFiles", so I created it manually, then a folder within that titled, "MXF", then a folder titled, "1". I then dragged/dropped footage from my external drive to these folders, and automatically, an icon of a computer, with "msmFMID" appeared. I'm guessing that Avid is now seeing these folders, but I still can't get any clips into my project. Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Brad

All bets are off if you don't let the camera handle the partitioning and formatting.

First of all, you can't use any file system other than FAT32, that's all the camera supports. Beyond that, the camera will create new partitions for every offloading operation, so it will manipulate the partition table on the drive , and it will do so with no regard for whatever else is there.

I don't use AVID, so I can't give you any advice there. Try the AVID subforum or have a look at this AVID workflow whitepaper.

I would have guessed that all bets are off, however:

I plugged the external drive to my laptop, and the media is still workable with Edius Broadcast.

So, the drive is not partitioned, but the media is there, and can be edited with Edius. I don't know how to check whether FAT32 is the structure.

I'm guessing that my scenario is what B. Green describes in his book with using an, "On the go" hard drive? I did this all by mistake of course.

DirtySanchez wrote up a tutorial in the AVID section, I'll try it.

Thank you THoff, for taking the time to respond.
