n00b Q: what's the deal with 35mm adapters?

Hi all. I'm a n00b with an HV20. I've read many threads where people mention using a 35mm lens adapter. I'd like to know what I'm missing regarding this. What's the benefit of going to a smaller diameter lens? What are the aesthetics uses of this technique?

THANKS.

You get a shallower depth of field.

If you don't know what that is:

The subject you focus on will be just as clear but as everything else is distanced more or less, and with a 35mm adapter, the aim is to make these parts blurrier. No, your subject won't be blurier, but the background and what's closer than the subject will be. Sometimes your subject will be blurry though. Say it's someone's face, you focus on the front of their face and their ears will be slightly blurry.

What exactly do you mean by smaller diameter lens?

Thanks a lot for the info!!!
Now i'm getting it.

"What exactly do you mean by smaller diameter lens?"
I thought that the 35mm where regarding diameter (for instance, hv20 has 43mm diameter), so i thought that 35mm adapter referred to going from 43mm to 35mm, but it seems i have mixed different stuff, right?

Thanks.

I can see where you are getting confused:

the 35mm adapter is referring to using a lens from a 35mm camera. And that 35mm is referring to the size of the film used, not any part of the camera. To make it more confusing, I'll bet most people are using lenses from digital SLR cameras which aren't technically 35mm because they don't use film. Although the lenses can be used (usually) with old-fashioned 35mm SLRs.

Hope that didn't confuse you more...
