Your Moment of Zen

I can't believe the comments on that page. It seems everyone supports the motorcycle rider even though he was drifting between lanes and riding in people's blind spots.

motorcycles are air cooled thats why it is legal to split lanes in traffic like that, atleast in california.

Wow, really? I always wondered why I saw so much lane splitting every time I was out there. Freaked me out. Of course, I was doing 5 mph on the freeway at the time.

It's illegal in Oklahoma and surrounding states, but what does being air-cooled have to do with the legality of "splitting lanes"? That's ridiculous.

fwiw, not all motorcycles are air-cooled, some are liquid-cooled.

It's legal in some states; in California it's called white-lining and IIRC it's legal as long as you're not exceeding the speed of traffic by a certain amount, like 5mph or so.

I don't know that air-cooled has anything to do with it, although I guess lobbyists might have given that as a reason... if that was a truly legit reason, shouldn't it be legal everywhere?

It's a risky business though; as a rider from a state where it was illegal, it always freaked me out to be driving a car in California and have bikers zipping through the space between lanes... I identified with 'em a bit too much, and hey, I was from one of the worst-driver places in the Union (Vegas) and I just wouldn't ever trust the drivers to stay in their own lanes -- I would expect stuff like this video shows to happen.

Maybe whitelining should be accompanied by using your horn when you're doing it -- it'd be annoying, but a little annoyance vs. the consequences this guy faced, well...

not sure if its the specific and only reason, other stuff comes to mind, but if a motorcycle sat in california traffic, it could over heat quickly. Some may be water cooled but most arent.

Yep, it seems insane, but:

Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?

Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.

It's definitely a gray area, though. The thinking is that if you are going to be rear ended by a car, the safest move would be to pull forward and lane split; instead of being pinned between two cars. So if there's no space for a car to turn in to, you are safe between cars.

Except when Mikko opens his door.

I think if air cooling is the issue, The transportation system shouldn't have to compensate for a design flaw, especially if it's dangerous.
