Hey,

I've just bought some new gear for a documentary that i'm trying to get to work: the panasonic hvx200, a brand new mac (10.4.10) and adobe premiere cs3. Traditionaly i've mainly shot on film and edited in avid or fcp, however, i now have the need to go digital and also got curious of the new adobe premiere cs3 for mac. However, it's seems to be pretty complicated to everything to work together (at this early stage). First, the dual system express card i planned to use to transfer the dvcpro "files" to my mac, won't install on os 10.4.10. That's a bugger! Secondly, adobe premiere doesn't support the dvcpro format (i knew that and they are working on a patch), but cineform and prospect hd (which will translate dvcpro to premiere readable files) can only work on pc's. sure, they can be installed on mac's, but they need the p2 viewer software to function (which can only be installed on pc's) so it's practically useless for mac's. or, am i wrong? i'm not in deperate need to start editing right away, but i need to find a way to store the footage on my p2 cards to my mac for later use. how do i go about doing that? this technical jungle is driving me mad, and i'm on a schedule... Please help me out with what, when, how and all that, to get my project going. Thanks!

Could I ask why you would buy a Macintosh and not buy Final Cut Studio?

That is what 90% of HVX200 users have.

Can you return Premiere and get Studio?

I'm a little confused at the choice here.

It definitely sounds like you needed to do some more research before you spent your cash. But, that's history at this point.

To store your footage... just hook up a hard drive to your Mac... create individual folders for each card you off load and then drag the contents and last clip file to the designated folder. If you can't use the duel systems adapter use your camera as an offloading device. You can do this via firewire.

or if you really like CS3 and feel rich...
Buy a copy of FCP and use that to ingest mxf footage and save out as whatever QT you like that you can edit in CS3

But i did lots of research, especially on the hvx200, and i bought it knowing premiere wouldn't support it without a patch or third party software. but the reason for me to use premiere is because i bought the adobe production studio since i work a lot with photoshop, illustrator, flash and after effects. So i did some research on premiere and i thought i'd give it a try before i'd buy the fcp studio, also life would be so much easier if i could use premiere since it is so tightly integrated with all the other products. Any thoughts on that, can premiere cs3 match fcp?

My dilemma is right now cuz i'm sure all the software wil be updated all in good time. But as for Prospect HD in combination with P2 Viewer - anyone recon that would be the best choice for capturing and editing HD (on mac), or would you wait for adobe's dvcpro patch that will be on the market this winter? As i said, i'm shooting till after x-mas so i don't really need the editing suite right now.

Cheers

If you really don't want FCS - for whatever reason, you could install XP through Bootcamp on your mac and run it the PC way. Barry Green has tons of info on this.

But most (all of us) who use FCS, also use some cind of Adobe bundle.

I wouldn't sit around and wait for a DVCPRO patch. It hasn't come the last 5 years, so I don't really see it coming anytime soon.

Or why not dump the mac for a pc, not starting a pc/mac competition but if you are going to run premiere... I'd be on a PC, or switch to FCS on the mac. Both have their ups and downs. To the best of my knowledge cineform is for PC only - looking at their site would confirm this. I wouldnt hold out on adobe releasing any patches for dvcprohd. matrox axio is a great solution for dvcprohd but once again its also on the pc side.

I think OSX version of Raylight is ready. I don't know how it works on Mac but workflow is very easy on xp. you can drag and drop mxf files directly in premiere cs3. No conversion, no problem. Raylight is a very good value. you should test the demo version...
here the link.

All you have to do is use Raylight; that'll make Premiere (and all other Mac software) compatible with the HVX files. It's a $95 download; guillaum972 provided the link.

For P2 Viewer etc; P2CMS is supposed to be released in the next few weeks, and that's a P2 Viewer for the Mac.

Well there is just one little hitch to using Raylight/Mac with Premiere/Mac, and that is the DVCPROHD codec. Raylight/Mac doesn't come with its own codec because it assumes FCP is installed, although we have a codec that runs on Intel cpus and quicktime/Windows it just needs to ported over to Quicktime/Mac. That might be done in the next few weeks.

DOH! Okay, that's a big hitch. What about the Imagine install utility that somehow installs the FCP DVCPRO-HD components to allow P2 Log to work on a system that doesn't have FCP?

I've not read anything about Premiere or Adobe having a patch for DVCProHD on the Mac or elsewhere. Nor have I seen any expected delivery date.

I have AE, Illustrator, PS, etc. on a Mac and FCP. These are tools. If you need a hammer, buy one.

I use both Premiere and FCP daily. There is no way 90% of HVX users use FCP. Many are using AVID, some Edius, some Vegas and some Premiere.

People forget that FCP does not support native MXF either, everything must be wrapped up in a QT file which takes just as much time as using Raylight, etc. in Premiere.

Each program has its advantages. Want to reverse telecine? Going to be WAY faster in Premiere and you also dont jake up your source file. It determines the repeat frames 100% accurately. In FCP you must use Cinema Tools and often have to manually assign the repeat frame. The built in scaler in FCP is way better than the one in Premiere. Edius is fast and easy and relatively bullet proof. Vegas has unequaled audio abilities. There is no "best" editor. If there was, I wouldnt need to use them all...

ash =o)

You don't have to manually assign repeat frames to Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools anymore.... In Final Cut Studio 2, Compressor 3 does batch Reverse Telecine and automatically finds the repeat frames to properly Reverse Telecine without babysitting it.
