Best Rugged Indoor/Outdoor Boom Mic

Where else can i order the Oktava? Sound-room is now saying they are out and have to wait for a shipment from MOSCOW and they don't know a date when the shipment will be there.

OLEG is the Senn 404 a better mic for interior shooting than the Oktava? I can get the 404 for $200 used. The Oktava is gonna be a while and we start shooting in less than a week! I can't find any info on the 404 online because its such an old mic.

you could see what can be found locally. Is most of your production interiors? Can you contact a local sound person and see if they can help?

Have you considered renting something locally to test out and see if you like it? That way you'll have something to use in the meantime and you'll know if you want to actually buy one.

"Rent" is not in the Guerrilla filmmaker handbook. But seriously, I need to use the same exact mics interior and exterior throughout the entire movie for audio consistency. If I rent a mic and don't like how it sounds, I'll have to reshoot.

you can rent mics pretty cheaply in Boston and you wont hear difference as far as consistency after post. Many films use the right mic for the right situation rather than the same mic to capture good sound.

i never compared the 404 to oktava i had few in my army service ( and that was 25 yers ago:-))
but from what i remeber it work exellent wiith nagra 4.2
by the way it is t power so you will need 12t source
as i recal it is quit ahot mic , about 20 mv twicw then octava what make it better for dialog recording and poor preamp stages
if that mic in good working order i guess it exellent tool

hotter output , you dont need to push the preamp to get more level and get more hiss to recording

no you dont want hiss - the hotter mic means you wont have to have your preamp (mixer) turned up so high (pushed) as to introduce hiss. A weaker mic signal means you would have to turn the preamp up higher (push) and hiss would possibly show up. The cleaner the preamp the less hiss, or the farther you can push it before hiss becomes an issue.

Okay let me try and figure out your description one more time

- The 404 is 20mv which is twice that of the Oktava.
- The 404 is better for dialog recording
- the 404 has poor preamp stages which is very good.

I think you're right on everything but the last one - the 404 is better for a system with poor preamp stages, like a cheap mixer. Mic's generally dont have a preamp built in - your camera (if it accepts a mic level input) has preamps. A mixer that accepts mic levels and puts out line level has preamps.

Okay. I'm learning now. I guess I'll keep my order for the Oktava going through then. The Senn 404 sounds like a little too much work. Thanks.

wow I cant even get a response together - the 404 is no more work than the oktava. if Oleg's specs are true (which I'm sure they are) then if in good condition and cheap the 404 is a great mic.
