I married a photographer

Nomis makes great points. In fact, just a couple of months ago, I was doing some work for a screenwriting camp, setting up their advertising sources for this year's camp.

So I'm going to their websites, contacting them and setting up some advertising. One of the websites that came up had done a complete re-design in the last year, going to all Flash. It was so cutting edge it wouldn't even load on the computer.

If I was 99% of people, they would have automatically lost the sale. Being that I'm slightly computer-savvy (though it's not my computer), I tried to update Flash. But for some reason, it wouldn't update. I actually tried for about 10 minutes with no luck, and then gave up. They offered me no HTML site, so I couldn't access them at all and they received no money from the camp this year.

Granted, this isn't a regular occurance, but you always want options.

I mean, the whole way that most o fthe internet works is that websites link to other websites and people stumble their way across til they get to something. If someone is surfing on their iPhone (which doesn't support flash AFAIK) and gets a link to your wife's site but can't look at it, they may not ever go back.

Im sure my grandma is not able to install it, but she can browse the web.
When was the last time your grandma hired a photographer?
The argument about reaching 100% of the audience doesn't have legs. What's important is the target audience. The target audience for a photographer: Ad Agencies, wedding planners, event/meeting planners, PR agencies and the like. Most of these businesses routinely access flash based sites. It's hardly a tragedy if Uncle Bob can't access the site, because Uncle Bob likes taking pictures so he would never even think about hiring a photographer. Advertising is about reaching the target audience, I think Luis' site does it quite well.

I'm not talking about 100% of the audience, but you want that website to be as available as possible. When you just shrug and tell a certain percentage of the internet to piss off, you are stepping on potential customers. Yes a lot of ad agencies and wedding planners have access to computers with flash, but you know what? Not every time, not all the time. One of them comes across the site while working on a friend's computer, can't see it, passes, moving on. The old saying is that with a website you have, what, 10 seconds to get them to stay before they move on? You shouldn't be throwing any of that away by removing someone's ability to access the website.

Luis, I may have possibly met you. I shot a wedding at Vintage Villas and met a husband-wife still photography combination. I doubt it was you because the husband was also doing photography, but it's a possibility.

Ehm... I dont think that she is all for Ad agencies, PR agencies etc. She makes pictures of weddings etc., so that means normal people hire her. For example my grandma, which has golden wedding and wants to have some nice memories of that.

I've done my fair share of shooting at Vintage Villas - but no, that wasn't me.
My wife and I haven't worked together at alot of weddings...
I started out doing weddings a long time ago - but haven't shot one in quite a while.
My wife really started pursuing photography as a business only in the past couple of years, so she's getting really into the wedding photography now.

Were you shooting on your own, or for a company?
If you need any work shooting weddings - I can definitely get you in touch with a great guy to work for. Just let me know.

The web designer was Matt Williamson of Earph Interactive.
I'd post a link to his site for you but ironically...he's redesigning it right now and it's offline.
:)

Drop me a line if you're interested in talking to him - I can get you his contact info.

Valid point - the bulk of her work has been for 'normal people' - but she's also done a fair amount of product type photography, as well as stuff for magazines, etc. So it's kind of a mixed bag right now. We're still trying to figure out where to put the focus in order to generate more work.

You definitely bring up some valid points Nomis.

SHAMELESS PLUG:
Speaking of which - if anyone needs any photography work (or knows anyone who does) in Austin, let me know. I'm sure I can talk my wife into a 'DVXUser discount.'

Flash version is an important criteria. If you publish to Flash 8 and I have Flash 6, I would have to upgrade my plug-in. Flash 8 makes it easy to do that, so it's less of an issue. For those that don't want to upgrade or can't because of IT policy, or who don't or can't have Flash, put SOMETHING there other than a blank screen. It doesn't have to be an equivalent site in HTML, e.g. the photography site could display some thumbnail images and a message saying "these look really cool on our flash site, we hope you'll get to see it soon!".

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks Everyone!

hey everybody! thanks so much to everyone who looked at the site.

i love that a simple shameless plug for me ended up in a discussion of Flash vs. HTML

just curious. . .how many of you were NOT able to see it at all?
