2min abstract motion-picture shot with hv10 (+CG)

I've just put my very first video public. I've had some noobish experiences before, but the results were pure garbage.
So i thought i could use some comments on this so you people can tell me where i'm at with my skills.
Please don't expect any plot or entertainment. The only thing i intended to do is to create something like an abstract painting in video-format.

By the way, the resolution i was working with was 1280x437 @ 24fps (downconverted from 25fps using twixtor). That's because the sharpness of canon's hv10 native 1440x1080 is more or less just on a 720p niveau to me.
And the reason for making it only 1280x437 instead of full 720p is that i mixed the real footage with computer animations that had an aspect ratio of 41:14.

I shot the real footage during this month whereas i designed and animated and rendered the motion-picture from the computer partly in autumn 2006 and in spring 2007.

So enough prelude - it's the only video on my youtube profile you can see here:

just for the record. i know it's a forum for dvx users (how blind must someone be not to see that) but i can't afford a better camera right now and there is no forum for hv10. At least as far as i know. But maybe you can just segue it and judge it from an artistic point of view. I would highly appreciate it. Thanks in advance

not my kind of film haha. What kind of feedback do you want? Generally arthouse is more about the quality of the image etc. What inspired you to film branches and stuff and then edit it?

what inspired me? staring out the window and freeing myself from stress. Yeah that's it basically
What kind of feedback do i want? Whatever i can get.

I loved it. I think you have a sense of visual timing - you understand intuitively how long an image can stay interesting before it starts degrading, and you've done a good job of keeping the imagery interesting. The music is a bit iffy, but tolerable.

If you have an interest in this kind of stuff, I'd recommend you check out the videos by the Japanese sound and light painting artist Takagi Masakatsu from the album "Pia" (the second disc). Unfortunately, this is not on youtube, though there are a bunch of other Takagi Masakatsu videos there, but in a completely different style. The stuff he did for Pia though is very similar visually (though not musically) to your piece.

Good job - keep at it!!!

if just checked the german amazon version. There's just one video on disk 2 called WATER FALL. and it's not old. Released this year right? At least released this year in germany. Is there really just one video or is this because of a different version for a different country?
I don't know if it's worth to buy the record just for one single motion-picture that is probably just a few minutes long.

But thanks for comment, thats certainly the one that put the biggest smile on my face. Thanks alot.

Just like you said, abstract. I like the visuals for a music video or credit sequence and think you succeeded in making something interesting to the eye and ear. I didn't understand the coffee mug or the candle at the end but I wasn't expecting to either. I tend like this type of stuff much more if it has been worked into a story the right way, just a thought.

well it's a part of my upcoming ep, which will have some vocal parts, so there will be a tiny little bit of a story, but i know, not exactly what you meant.
the real footage is only staffage, eyecandy to say, with no meaning exept for one particular shot, that hopefully most people will focus on after hearing all the "songs".
The main fundament of this shot (and of the following 2 videos that i have been working on, but that still are not finished yet) is the one human being (here it's just the shadow) that remains on the chair at the end of the audio track and floats in the "coffe mug".

But i shouldn't analyse my own work too much. Because it spoils everything.

It's easily available on Amazon, and I bought it not too long ago:

You can get it used for even less, just make sure it's the 2-disc enhanced version. Anyhow, it's not just a few minutes - the entire second disc is videos:

1. eau
2. study for camera
3. fround
4. pia
5. water fall

You won't regret it. The guy is doing really interesting work.

For purely musical stuff, I love his CD "Journal for People"... in fact, I'm listening to it right now :)

Wow - Welcome top the forums - your clip certainly different than a lot of the stuff we see here, and no apologies for whatever type camera you happen to use.

I tend to look to this type of art to evoke an emotion, what I got was more a sense of discordant confusion? The jitters, choppy cuts and fast pulls kept me from any kind of flowing sensation and the cuts just didn't seem to sync with the score. Left me feeling kinda disturbed, as if I should have felt one way but actually felt another.

Lot of the shots were technically interesting, just didn't "come together" for me. Hard to critique artistically on something like this without knowing it's intent. If you enjoyed putting it together that's what counts.

Thanks for sharing anyway.
