I was told that this camera shoots 1080p. I don't think this is true!! Can someone clarify this with me??

Also if the HDV24p mode is turned on the manual says it records it as 60i (frames) onto the tape. This makes no sense to me!!!! Why would you want the footage recorded as 60i when you want the footage to be 24P!!!!! Very confused!!!

Is this because you have to remove the frames in FCP6 to make it 24 frames after??

Basically yes. This method of 24p encoding is called a "pulldown," which adds extra frames to the original 24 frames in order to make it a 60i stream. The HV20 uses a 2:3 pulldown, meaning that every other frame is duplicated and then tripled. So 12x2= 24 and 12x3=36 which makes 60 frames of both interlaced and progressive footage.

When you switch to 24p mode it, it is 1080/24p which you can say 1080p. It uses 2:3 pulldown which repeats one frame and makes it 30p which is then recorded as 60i frames. Using applications like cineform's NEO HDV you can easily remove the pulldown and work with 1080/24p. The reason of the pulldown is to record it in a NTSC signal. The pal version has 25p and 50i mode so it can record 25p inside the 50i signal without the pulldown.
