FS-100 24PN Compatibility w/ P2 24PN?

Hey there all you HVX pro's,

I am shooting a feature film in Mongolia, which means lots of time in the field using the FS-100. I am hoping to shoot 720 24pn (mainly cause I like the image and the undercranking/overcranking). My plan as of now is to do most of my shooting directly to the fs-100 in it's PN mode, andwhenever I need to shoot slow-mo to use my p2 cards (I have one 4gig and an 8gig coming).

So, specifically, will the footage stored on the fs-100 in PN mode sync easily w/ footage from my P2's once i bring it into FCP? Is there any difference in the fs-100's version of PN from a P2 card's PN? Is it reliable to record to the fs-100 in PN? Is it better to use PN mode or the quicktime PN mode? Is there anything else I would want to know that I don't know to ask?

Thanks guys,
Kendogg88

You'd probably want to use the Quicktime mode, and the footage should cut just fine with the P2 24pN stuff.

Thanks David. Why is quicktime better? From what I read clips often get broken up into multiple segments when you capture in quicktime-true?

Also, I'm hoping to shoot a lot of timelapse shots... is it easy/possible to down convert footage shot in 1080i into 720 24p? Or would you recomend using the fs-100 for time lapse?

Thanks!

I've been using the FS100 nonstop (as well as P2 cards) for the past few months.

There is no difference between the FS100 footage and the footage you record onto P2 cards. Whether you shoot in Quicktime mode or P2 mode on the Firstore is really just a matter of personal perference. Personally I always shoot in Quicktime mode because I would rather just copy my files over and drop then directly into FCP as opposed to copying them over and having to go through the P2 import process to convert the MXF files to Quicktime. But - it's all a matter of preference.

As far as the quality and integrity of the actual video files - it's all just different roads leading to the same DVCProHD footage. The footage is all the same.

I got the firmware-can I preview footage?

I got the firmware-can I preview footage?

Thanks for this help guys.

So once i've captured in 24pn on the FS-100 is there anyway to playback the clips to check them, or do i have to transfer them to a computer to watch them?

You can play clips off the FS-100 out to the camera, but you will only see them on the camera's LCD screen. When playing back PN clips from the Firestore it will only play back the video, not the audio. Instead you'll see a message on teh screen warning you that the audio cannot be played back in that mode.

Check out your FS100 manual - it has all the info in it (even though it's horribly written).

I shot a bunch of interviews at 720 24p, recorded to the FS-100 in quicktime PN mode. Twice the FS-100 stopped saying it was full, though as soon as I pushed record again it worked fine. Anyone now why this might happen?

Then, once I transfered the files onto my hard drive, I was unable to import them or play them. I only got a general error message, something along the lines of "this quicktime movie can not be opened." Is there a codec I need, or a firmware update? What is the latest firmware update I should have?
