News of a new hvx200?

Hey I was just wondering if there is any news of a new hvx200 being made. I think it's an awesome camera, but it has a few flaws that I would love to see get fixed, the low light sensitivity, and the ultra low res viewfinder. If there isn't going to be a new release in 3 more years, I probably will buy it now. Just wondering if you guys heard any news about it. I know the hpx500 came out not too long ago, but it's over my spending limit.

I tend to overcome the low light issues with lighting (try shooting any HD/HDV camera in low light) and should I need more viewfinder resolution, there are a range of external monitoring options from the inexpensive Ikan to the feature-laden Panasonic. I don't think anybody would speculate what's coming down the road in 3 years. Three years-- give me a break. Buy it. Use it. Make your money back from it and if in 3 years you need to replace it, well that's called business. Pardon me if I am being a little cynical here, but honestly... And if anybody actually knew what was on the design agenda, do you think they would actually violate their non-disclosure agreements and tell you? Panasonic has repeatedly told us that there are no immediate plans for HVX replacement, particularly since it can be upgraded with fiirmware. My standard response to "when will a new model be released" is "Tuesday, along with the release of the week's new DVDs."

nice answer Ned. I've never understood the people arguing about low light performance as it's always garbage in... garbage out. Like, with film if you have low light shooting then you have high gain and yuck... there's no miracle for poor exposure stuff, and the more expesnive cams will do a better job but still not optimal.. maybe more passable but thats it.

I do say though that If I had to get into a pissing match. The LCD is the only thing I have now come to hate, but I only ever use it for checking color anyway.. as the viewfinder is a much better option as well as an onboard LCD. I was especially disturbed by the HVX LCD when I got to use the A1.. and that cam, with all of its weird canon flavors, has a great LCD.. one that you can actually tell when you are and are not in focus... now that's something the HVX LCD just isn't possible to do with... without using focus assist, that is.

Great cam.

Bad LCD.

Bad Firewire 4-pin connection.

If you have clients, make money.

Unless you have a cam, you won't have clients.

There will definitely be new cameras within the next 3 years, whether from Panasonic or others. The only thing we've been told about the HVX200 is that it'll remain unchanged throughout the rest of this year or, put another way, I believe it was said that there would be "no changes until at least 2008". Doesn't mean there will be any changes in 2008, just that it's been ruled out that any updated model will appear this year.

If you can navigate the byzantine menus of Panasonic's P2 website, go to the HVX200 questionnaire where they ask owners what features they want in the next model. I won't spoil the ending where they reward you for completing the form.

Do you get a free p2 card?

Interestingly, I spent ten minutes looking for the feedback page and found none at the site.

David,
You filled out the questionnaire too!!!!
I always wondered what happened to that missing shipment of 2gb cards at NAB 2004

What's interesting is that I had a conversation with Jan at Cinegear Expo, where she showed me the AG-HPG10 "P2 Gear". I remarked how clear the LCD on it was, and she told me it was the exact same one as in the HVX200.

I think some of the perceived lack of clarity of the LCD is due to the anti-reflective finish of the HVX LCD, which the AG-HPG10 does not have. Instead, it has a glossy finish, something I generally despise in laptops and LCD monitors because of their tendency to cause glare. I think the anti-reflective finish causes too much diffusion.

only other thing I'd add is the wrong way that the power adapter goes in with the wires tucked badly on the inside. Just seems really wrong for so many reasons..

other than those.. couldn't be happier and I'll be buying another HVX in Sept.. just hope something isn't announced in October...

Ha, i got that folder, didn't think that was really the "prize" everyone was talkign about. lolz.
What a terrible consolation "prize" that was. Beyond terrible.

I actually have the new HVX200. It's called the "HVX200B(revis)." It's really cool - let's me use 35mm lenses n' crap. I hear there is a third model coming out called the "HVX200H(ydra)." And that one like totally looks ultra mega ok!

But you still might want to wait 3 years or so to see if a 4th model comes along.

You say that as if you were expecting a free P2 Store or something for filling out an online survey.
