what's the best mic to get?

i just got my dvx, and i'm looking to get a shotgun, and boompole for it. what do you guys recommend for me to get? what's the best mic for me? i've used the Canon XL1 and GL2 from school, and i used just the mic it came with or a freakin' piece of crap hand mic that's not really for video. i need something that will pick up the dialogue, and the important stuff, and keep out the background noise. thanks for any help

An Audio Technica AT-4073a will suit you well (but so will a lot of other mics).

The biggest part of the equation will be the person handling the mic.

Please read those stickies. Most of the answers you're after can be found over there.

Any more specific questions?

ok im reading the stickies. sorry, sorta glanced past them earlier. i'll probably be getting the kit #6 cause i do indoor, and outdoor filming. sorry again for not seeing the stickies

hey it's a question that never has a final answer :)
i'm very excited to hear the new DPA shotgun slated for release this winter. based on their fantastic music mics and unbelievable lav mics, i think it's going to be one of the best on the market.
right now, my favorites are still the venerable Neumann KMR81 and the newish Schoeps CMIT 5U. The Neumann has that fantastic warm sound and the Schoeps has the great reach and rejection. matter of preference, of course, but i don't think you can go wrong with either of those mics.
good luck with the new kit and have fun!

it's a closer match to Schoeps collette systems which are more widespread than Sanken shotguns, so it's more a matter of personal taste.

well like i said, personal taste. last year i A/B'ed the Schoeps and the CS3-E side to side and i picked the Schoeps - might be worth doing again, but at the time i preferred the Schoeps.

well the test consisteted of lining up our four top shotguns - Sennheiser MKH60, Neumann KMR81, Sanken CS3-E and Schoeps CMIT 5U, this was right when the Schoeps was released and we received one of the first models. we tested room tone, indoor dialogue, and a quick outdoor scene, yes there are always speeding cars outside on this busy street (and a big freeway just a stone's throw away, parallel to the street). the mics performed differently in these situations of course. i thought indoors in a quiet environment nothing could beat the KMR81 but the Schoeps came in a very close 2nd place. i am not a big fan of the 60 so i felt it came in 4th place. outside, i found the Schoeps to perform wonderfully with picking up the least background noise in our short dialogue scene.
we do tests like this whenever we can so we're not just blindly selling products based on the company's marketing lingo. we want to know what really works best - my opinion doesnt mean any more than anyone elses', but at least it's informed from some interesting trial and error experiments :)

well that combined with i listen to what our customers are saying about the mics after using them on films and TV shows for months. consistently, the Schoeps is coming back with glowing reviews and our sales numbers also show that it is a preferred choice. we didn't even promote the mic heavily, it did it on its own, and word of mouth is what sold it.

in quit envirment indoors you dont use shotgun - so for the same what you pay for the schops logo you can buy another mic -
waist of money for real life - belive me i work with mics ( have personaly 7 shotguns and few more in the rentings)

"waste of money" is even more subjective than "sounds better"! you're not wasting anything by buying a quality microphone that you will use hundreds of times and make good money with. so you spend a few hundred more upfront, one time, but the mic lasts you a lifetime. i don't agree with that line of thinking, as long as you like the sound and performance, it's then worth the $$.

no steve you dont get anything better anything that even 1 person will notice after dialog editor .
i call it waist of money for the real life . but what the **** i know iam in the midle east a\nd you are top seller in hollywood

it's all good oleg, i know you know your stuff and have a lot of equipment experience, but i do get to demo all these products myself and also to mixers in all the different areas of production sound, so i get a very wide perspective on what is good and what isn't - not just my own opinion but a larger collective opinion. if everyone that comes in here says "this Schoeps sucks! what a waste of money" then i will take another look at that mic and try to understand why people don't like it. the fact is, everyone coming through these doors are saying "I want the Schoeps!" and it has nothing to do with the logo, but because they tested it on a shoot and now want one for themselves because of its performance.

my opinion means little, compared to the guys out there actually doing the work... so... that's what it comes down to for me.

as not as others i have to right to choose what sucker i will pul from the dust in the morning and nail another gig - noone ever told me anything about the sound i bring even i use 10% worth chiniz mic on 200grand comertial
i dont say that schoeps is not agrate mic i say you have much more profit on it :-) inside the house the cmc 5 with 41 sounds better and outside on buisy steret the cs-3 bit ashit from the schoeps so why to bother ?
