"Broken" Guys New Short Film "Cyn" HVX200 Trailer Under $1000

Hey Alex its good to see someone following their dream. I think forums are good and bad because you never now the level of people that are giving advice or compliments for that matter. As for your movie it reminds me alot of Hostel, Saw and Tourista, with a spice of terminator thrown in? I thought I saw some robot type dude in the trailer maybe Im wrong.
With Hostel 2 failing badly a the box office I think we have gotten our fill of movies that have a lot of violence / torture in a confined location and throw in some cool graphic effects that mask the fact that their is nothing original and recently they arn't good scripts as well, combined with B-list actors for the most part.
For your next film I would suggest you use a film lens adapter to achieve what it seems you were trying to do with your film. I saw you used the Natress filters which has a Comic book filter and give you that look. The ? you have alot in your responses, to affect good footage or not. Well its always a personal thing and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Id like to see what you can do with a good film lens adapter and some lens I think it would give your work more depth and make it look more professional and less like video. I have supplied a link to some footage we shot with the DVX 100 and an adapter and when used correctly looks more like film than the HVX, which I actually own as well. I will also link footage from a great trailer that used the film lens adapter and you can see how much more powerful of a picture it makes. Keep in mind both of these examples were shot with Home depot work lights and one 500 watt softbox.
Enjoy

Nice work bro. The Natress filters weren't use to get a comic book effect. I combine three packages to get me final look. I like Natress thoug, very powerful.

Looks visually awesome as always.

You guys do an exceptional job with the visually look of your movies and a brilliant job with marketing execution. The write-ups, the bonus features, the posters, the web docs, the website, etc. Seriously top-notch.

My only complaint is that I just don't feel the stories or characters are really strong enough. I think the story was my least favorite part of Broken and looks to be the same here. I don't know, I guess they just don't really do it for me. IMHO, I just don't think they are very strong scripts.

It depends on what you are going for, though. For me, a good script with character development wins out over action and VFX. But you guys are really talented at the latter.

Thanks bro. I agree with your BROKEN comment. I was learning how to write with BROKEN and it was a major learning experience. Cyn on the otherhand is a 3 min film (5 with credits) so not much time for character development but the press that has seen the film says it's much better written than BROKEN and I would agree. I has a satisfying ending and doesn't leave the audience guessing. I think people forget that shorts are exactly that...short. They shouldn't expect huge stories or major character development. A short filmmaker needs to be very economical with his/her story, shorts and edits.

BTW, i personally do not like using the 35mm adapter because of the speed of moving the camera and the extra need of light (because of the stop loose). I have seen it used and if you have a good DP it's beautiful. Everything is not in focus and it looks much more cinematic. With Cyn I had 6 days to do the entire film (from script to final output) so the adapter was out of the question, and I love to shot with two cameras (it's the editor in me ; )

I am of the same opinion actually. Using 35mm adapters takes a lot more time and finesse and can really bog down the production process. They can give you that more filmic look, but at what expense? I planned on using one for my short, but after the first day I decided to shoot the rest of it with just the stock lens and was actually very pleased with how the overall image turned out and how it just made the production process so much easier. With 35mm adapters, lighting is always going to be a challenge, and most of the time with smaller budgets you can't really afford to make your image look as it should. There are tricks for obtaining the shallow DOF with the stock lens and sometimes it's okay to have that deep DOF. In fact, a lot of good directors prefer it.

Some folks use a screwdriver, some use a hammer. What counts is the final product. And Alex has turned out a visually awesome final product. Adapter or not.

Thanksman! No plans to post it on-line. It would kill my chances in festivals.

Thanks bro!

I thought the thinking behind Hollywood trailers these days was to show you all the interesting effects and then tell you the ending so the audience doesn't need to waste the time and money watching shi**y movies at the cinema. In which case the Cyn teaser misses it's mark.

It's amazing the level of information you generate for these shorts. If nothing else the Broken DVD helped me realize what a lazy, unmotivated, bastard I was.

As for the grain - I don't like it - never do in any movie though but I can see the point and it looks pretty effective here.

Keep up the good work and keep that info coming.

good trailers are interesting enough to get you in the theater without telling you the ending. i.e. Sixth Sense, Matrix, Sin City, etc. good movies but you dont know how they will end.

i had no idea how these movies would end but they looked hot and gave me a general idea of what was going to happen.

ALEX

i think you are due for an update. Its almost the end of the week and we have yet to see a new web episode.

how'd you get a hold of the cute Latin chic in your SOULLESS short? I've seen her on THE SHIELD as a regular cop.

I meet her at a film lab and presented her with a poster with her on it. She liked it, liked the script and now we'll be working together on my new feature. :violent5:

thanks!

ALEX

No disrespect because you know that i am a huge admirer of your work. But the last web doc sucked. We want to see as much of the movie or at least the making of the movie. Your cool but right now were dying to see more of the film. all we have seen so far is the teaser and one or two web docs to show us the flick

Thanks! I had my friend compose the music for it but you can use any music you like. As long as you do not sell it and only have it on the internet and do not broadcast your cool. Good luck!:kali:

Dude wait...I'm confused, you shot it in one day? Edited in one day? Music? Color correction? Are these actors your friend? Phenomenal job by the way, your passion just overflows over onto the screen.
