Canon XHA1, downconvert for capture to FCP

I pulled an XH-A1 out of the box the other day and I'm trying to figure out some of the intricacies of capture.

My original thought was that I could shoot HD and downconvert to SD upon capture. It seems to me that the option is available, but when I go into the menu to choose downconvert, it's blacked out.

I've been able to shoot in HD and capture in HD, but for my purposes I'd like to shoot in HD for archiving and use the SD for production at the moment.

Can anyone shed some light on what I'm missing here?

You have to unplug the camera from the computer in order to change the setting. Don't know why but that's what you must do.

I had this same problem when i got my A1... there is nothing about it in the manual, and i am sure it has caused a lot of people a lot of trouble... but as was stated before, you must unplug the cable before changing the settings, and then your computer will see it as a DV camera as apposed to an HDV camera!

what version of fcp are you running. I bought the xha1 and was having similar trouble in fcp and the xpress pro, avid. in fcp, all my footage looks jittery. I shot both sd and hd all differnt frame rates. can yu tell your settings in fcp and the your camera. thankyou, e.

Could you elaborate on jittery?

If there are long pauses while editing, your computer probably is not fast enough to play back HDV footage in real time. Look into Cineform if you think this may be the problem.

If your footage is simply "strobes" it may be because you are in 24f mode and you are panning too quickly with a low shutter speed. A rule of thumb is that it should take an object 7 seconds to travel across the screen.

Could you elaborate? That would help to pinpoint the problem. Thanks.
