After agonizing for months over whether to buy the DVX or Canon A1..........I just ordered a DVX100B from B&H........ $2649 BTW.

My decision was based on the fantastic videos/films Ive seen by this group that were produced using the DVX.

Other factors include; price was good; in that I deliver all of my work on DVD; the small market for HD customers, and that I did not want to spend money on updating my NLE , all helped me decide on the DVX.

Im looking forward to more creative videos/films, experimenting and learning, and hopefully be able to "contribute" to this group that has, and is, so helpful to me.

thanks to all.

It's a tough choice. I'm down to three, DVX100 , A1 or the HV20. Like you the price and not having to do the computer upgrades will probably get me the DVX100.

So how long before B&H gets them in?

"Estimated arrival at B&H 7-14 business days. " who knows what that means...

In a private letter to the sales dept.....they quoted 4-6 weeks....but

Im hoping that was just to cover their rear should Panasonic change their schedule. Im hoping it is the quoted 1-2 weeks.

I like the $2649 price...so I can wait.:crybaby:

I am now a member as well. :)

I got my DVX100b used locally for $3300CND with only 50 hours of use on it. It also came with a Petrol bag, 10 pro quality Panasonic tapes and an Teffen UV filter.

Even if I wanted buy the camera new I wouldn't be able to until at least late June as all the stores here in Toronto are back-ordered.

Yay!

Yeah, good for you. At least you are buying something and working. There's nothing worse than sitting and waiting for the "perfect" camera/gadget that's just around the corner (except there's always a new one around another corner). Congratulations.

For those who can't help bitching (MEMBER HERE :)!), well, I can't help bitching, so here comes the *****: how lame is it for Panny to keep flogging these cameras which by rights are ancient in the fast moving world of electronic gadgetry... couldn't Panny at least come out with a dvx100s or something, so we don't feel shtoopid buying something that's obviously not bleeding edge... I bet there'd be an explosion of folks who'd just jump on a new dvx100 if Panny at least pretended there was some kind of refresh on the dvx100, instead of the same old horse... you wouldn't have half the struggle people go through comparing it to the A1 etc. Oh well, it's just mo moanin' and pissin' :(

People are buying the DVX's for a reason,,,,they are good cameras. I just wish panny would have made it with 16:9. Not everyone wants or needs HD/HDV.

If Panasonic came out with a dvx100s it would be devestating to all those that use the fact that there isn't an upgraded dvx as to why they haven't made their monumental epic yet......

Besides, if they come out with a 100s it will just bring a whole new crop of "can I get the film look with a dvx100s....." questions here at the forum..... But if they do please, please put in a rubber washer to stop the clunking sound when the camera is off:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Maybe the home page for dvxuser.com should be a search page.... with really big letters.....

The way I see it is that Panasonic is probably putting all of their development resources into HD rather than upgrading the DVX100. They know that the older DVX is still selling like hotcakes (which is evident up here in Toronto since no one has it in stock and it's back ordered to hell) so why bother messing with it for the time being?

I waited for the announcements at NAB to see if there would be an upgraded pro-sumer camera. When nothing came out I went for the DVX100 because I know that it has the reputation for still being one of the best cameras that I can afford.

not hatin on the DVX, but once HD becomes the norm or standard then the DVX will be basically a holdover for true diehards :)...anyway my next cam purchase will be the HVX.

I guess the big question is: when will HD actually become the 'norm'?

i think that depends on where you live. i live in stx its considered a small market so hd wont be here for another 5 yrs most likely. cuz i dont think every station will be hd from start to finish they will most likely still shoot on sd and just let the tower transmit in hd.

i've also been debating on whether to get a dvx, hv20, or xh a1.

i've decided to get the DVX.

yea... it's old. but the hv20 has bad rolling shutter due to the CMOS sensor, and the A1 is kinda pricey (for me) and i don't want to upgrade my NLE just to edit in HD.

like others have said... the market is very small for HD customers right now. and i mean VERY small. the only way other people can watch your video is if it's over the internet. lame.

i'm gonna wait another year or two until more people own HDTV's and HD DVD players (not to mention HD DVD burners) and when the price comes down a bit.

Yes...the reputation of the DVX100 is fantastic.

I really dont want to pay for Canon's R&D with the introduction of the A1. I would expect some initial "bugs" in the A1, yet to be discovered. The DVX has proven dependable over a long period of time as evident by the posts on DVXuser.com.

Working within a budget one must look at the best "bang for the buck". When it becomes "necessary" to have HD to be in the business, then I will purchase an HD cam, upgrade my NLE, more $ on software etc. For now Im looking forward to getting my "outdated" DVX100B :)

Yes, that's true, too. I've never been big on jumping on a first-generation product. No matter how much time was put into development there will still be bugs that will come out once the item goes into production and into the customer's hands.

Some companies are better than others when it comes to first-gen product but I'd rather not be their guinea pig after dropping thousands of dollars (not to mention running into the risk of something going wrong when on a job).

hmm...... i wonder if cinematographers had the same debate when 35mm came out to battle 16mm??? or when color film came to duke it out with black and white???

the user base was much smaller then, it was only serious professionals who could afford doing that stuff, Im pretty sure everyone jumped on the color bandwagon as quick as they could (although there was slight detail/sharpness degratation if I remember correctly, the fact that it actually looked like true life compensated for it) 35mm is/was WAY more expensive, so if budgets allowed, then I think it was on obvious choice to opt out for 35mm, now that stuff is being produced at the consumer/prosumer level, companies have to decide whats necessary for the average "prosumer" and as a result a lot of things don't happen (at least initially) to suit everyone's tastes...If you need the extra resolution, and are willing to sacrfice reliability (as a result of hdv/new generations of non revised cameras) then go for it, or if you have deeper pockets, get an hvx/hpx, just be sure to consider the new workflow...or if your willing to wait, see how dvcprohd unfolds

yes, very good!! nocoast :) anyway.... welcome downsouth and i hope to see some stuff of yours soon!!!
