Delivering on HD: HD-DVD or Blue Ray?

Hello all. So, I shot a 30 minute doc with my HVX200, in 720 24pn. The end result out of FCP looks really nice. Now, the client wants me to deliver on HD so they can project it. They will rent a Blue Ray or HD DVD player for the event. So, what do I do? Who burns Blue Ray or HD DVD? Lightning Dubs doesn't. Santa Monica Video doesn't. None of the companies in the LA411 do. How do I deliver on HD? I know they aren't going to rent an HDCam deck for this event!

Thanks for the insight.

Blu-Ray burners and media are readily available for both the PC and Mac, check Shop4Tech for instance.

There are no HD-DVD burners or media available for purchase yet, but some HD-DVD players like the Toshibas will play disks recorded on standard red-laser DVDs. That's obviously not going to cut it for long videos, but for a 30 minute piece, you should get pretty decent results -- it looks like ~18Mbps MPEG2 will fill a DVD to the brim.

The Official AVS Guide to HD DVD Authoring

I did a quick search and see that they have started shipping blank Blue Ray discs. You'll need an HD authoring software and burner to keep it end to end HD. You can also check out videoguys.com.

There is even rewriteable Blu-Ray media, making experimenting and the risk of producing coasters a non-issue.

Give yourself plenty of time. If I'm not mistaken I read an article in DV magazine or one of those, that talks about a 12hr ordeal to encode and burn one disk. Of course, 1/2hr might be less, but still 3hrs would be a long time to burn. (specially if it didn't work and you had to make 2-5 tries.

ps: I think I saw a BluRay burner at Fry's. probably a good price for a place that you can get it the same day.

I'll burn you a HD-DVD on my Mac if the file is too big i'll run it through Compressor or Cleaner. PM me if you are interested.

Sorrenson Squeeze 4.5 will encode Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, while DVDit Pro HD will auther and burn Blu-Ray.
I'e also used Sorrenson to encode stand-alone HD program streams that play off DVD's or off a Hard Drive (Just copy the file off DVD)

It's "blu" not "blue"

However, the new release of DVD SP 4.2 in FCS2 WILL NOT properly burn 720/24pN to HD DVD. There is a bug

Anything over 60 burns beautifully though

Are you refering to making a HYBRID Disc? As far as I know there is no HD DVD burner or support for the mac yet. If you know something I dont that would be great.

Otherwise I believe you're refering to making a Hybrid disc which burns a small amount of HD media to a standard dvd-5. These disc will only playback in compatabile mac systems, not conventional standalone players.

What DVD players will play a HD-DVD "hybrid" DVD? (burning a HD-DVD on a regular 4.7gb DVD-R)

I have a Toshiba A2 that will playback 4.7gig DVD-R's with HD media.

The probem is that you can only use standard def authoring tools. Essentially you are making a standard def format DVD structure that, oh by the way, plays HD media. I have not entirely figured out all the "gotchas". I have had some problems with the menus, but then I am not an expert in DVD Studio Pro. It's finicky and involves making some coasters. Go to kenstone.net and there is a tutorial on this.

I am not sure about authoring tools for the PC. I have read that only a few programs like Sonic will do the actual authoring using the full feature set of either BD or HD-DVD.

DVD Studio Pro will not do any authoring with the actual HD features, just kind of a bastardized hybrid. The HD-DVD to a standard DVD will work however.

So using DVDSP it will come out high quality right?
And which Toshiba DVD player will play the discs?

Use Ulead Movie Factory 6+ and you can burn your own HD-DVD using red laser media - either 4.7 GB single layer or 8.5 GB dual layer. I recommend Verbatim media, especially is you consider dual layer burning.

Check this out on how to burn your own HD-DVD disks:

I have a Toshiba XA1 HD-DVD player and no problems with playback. The A1 and A2 HD-DVD players by Toshiba also have no problems playing back these disks, and can be purchased at ~$299 these days with the rebates from Toshiba...so why rent a playback unit.

Good Luck!

To be clear, the Toshiba REGULAR DVD players can play the hybrid HD-DVD's right?
(not a toshiba hd-dvd player)

If they are going to rent a HD or Blu-Ray player for the event, I would instead have them rent a Panasonic 1200 deck. You could pick it up the night before and lay the Doc back to tape, then they could play that back to the projector. That would give them the best quality possible as long as they have a Hi-def Projector.
