Surfing Action in the OC - 5 minutes

Shot for about a half an hour the other day, and here are the results. 5 minutes of some small waves and the groms from Newps that shred them.

There's even a few shots of some big name pros.

Please go easy on me here, this was my second shoot with the A1 and has been part of my testing for playback and whatnot. JUST A TEST... I repeat JUST A TEST

all shot at manual 60i - varying shutter speeds from 1/60 up to 1/120 - ND on - all auto off - color gain at around 15, all other settings are stock.

128MB download (please right click to "save as" OR right click "download linked file" for you Mac guys) running time is 5 minutes - if nothing else watch it for the music.

Comments appreciated, even if it's "hey you suck" -

This should be interesting!

I was getting an error message when I tried to run it, but changing the filename to surfing.mov fixed it.

Anyway, it looks great. Very slick and professional. The colors look a tad on the flat side, but other than that I'm very impressed. Makes it hard to believe I have the same cam! Keep up the great work!

OK, it's updated... really sorry about that.

Filename was no good for PC's I guess.

It does work though, tested here at the studio on an AMD machine so it should be good to go. You do need to save it though, doesnt seem to like the browser on the PC ( it was firefox, and if I just clicked on the link it would take forever and then give me a quicktime logo with a question mark) If I downloaded it QT would play it no problem.

(my pc tech guy isn't here this week, anybody offer any advice on why this doesn't play properly in the browser?)

I'm glad you like it DJ. Once again, in terms of color the ONLY setting changed was color gain... zero correction of any kind in post. Simply capture, edit, output via compressor to a mov.

I leave for Kauai in 3 days for almost a month (again for those of you that know me) to direct and shoot a mini documentary on the endangered and endemic species of Kauai. It will be my third and hopefully the one that finally gains some traction in the documentary world. It's really hard to get funding to do this stuff right, and there are guys that are MUCH better at it than me. I have such a passion for preserving the island and it's resources that I really don't think I will ever stop trying until I feel that I've made a difference. Even then I don't think I'll stop because once you make a small difference what is to stop you from making a big difference?

Kauai specifically has some of the worlds rarest plants and animals and they are all in danger, with little to nothing being done to protect their existance.

Anyway sorry for the rant, I'm glad you liked the surf stuff (that's just me goofin with the camera to learn before the important stuff comes up)

Kind of a bummer.... This thing has been downlaoded almost 100 times and NO feedback other than DJ?

Ohhh well... I guess that means it sucks???

VERY GOOD!

Maybe replace some of the transitions that are spinning. Those are a bit 80s and make it seem just like you did it because.

Other than that kick ass!

OK cool... my ego was feeling a bit crushed there, but I'm much better now.

Thanks guys.

I leave in T minus one day for Kauai. I will have LOTS of good footage of the ocean and rain forest to share when I get home. I'm trying to track down a housing as we speak.

Great footage Todd.

I was at Sunset Beach (North Shore, Oahu) a week ago testing my new A1, but your surf footage is much much better than mine. I had an extremely difficult time focusing. I look forward to seeing some more stuff from you.

hey you suck

Not really, but I am a little disappointed that someone didn't jump on that sooner. You asked for it. Still downloading. I'll let you know what I think.

IBE... LOL... thanks. I need to be humbled sometimes.

Just got back from Kauai this morning. Things got cut short, and it's going to take at least one more trip over there to complete the project. We shot about 8 hours of footage all over the island.

Problem was: weather was TOO good for many of the shots that were needed. LOL...

It's going to take me awhile to get anything posted but I am working on. I still haven't even reviewed any of the footage.

Ranger: Focus problems?

Can you elaborate? May be the camera because I haven't really done anything special in regards to focus. The ONE thing most people forget to do is turn the speed down. The super quick focus thing is a joke because it becomes SO obvious when it speeds out of focus and back again.

Change the setting to slow it down and that problem will go away.

Hey mang!

Loved the footage! Of course, I'm biased ... being fond of the water/surfing and all.

Do me a favor, tell those groms an old salty TX bloke is coming to school them!

Here's my homebrew, very low-fi response to your sweet film:

Kicking It Texas Style(tm)

maing... lol... I know a dude that says "man" that way... He's this vietnamese heavy metal / punk rock guitarist. (I should do a short on him, it would be classic)

Anyhow, nothing personal here but those groms would leave you with your tail between your legs on waves as good as the ones in YOUR video. They call Josh "DestrHoyer" for a reason. LOL...

In all seriousness maybe it's the fact that I'm on a 1.33 laptop until my new machine gets here but your entire movie is slow motion for me. That wave is sick, just perfect lefts lined up one after the other. I sure would like to see a higher quality, quicktime version of that.

Yes, those groms would stomp me I'm sure. Just jiving. That's me riding throughout ... I mostly like to cruise, hang in the pocket, etc.

I slowed everything down on purpose; mostly to try and make short waves look longer! :) I'm no pro in the vid scene ... just hacking things out here and there.
The beginning section is in Corpus Christi, TX ... a break called Fish Pass ...

It was so on that day ... for TX anyway ... surfed until we passed out.

If I can get something encoded at higher res I'll post you a link. Keep up the good work!

Nice video. Super clean. To bad the bump in the water wasn't bigger with offshores. Thanks for posting.
