Free/fast/automated 24p PC workflow

Steve Szudzik did a great job with a standalone exe that uses freeware tools to remove pulldown and sync audio on HV20 captured footage:

http://www.szudzik.net/vegas/scripts/HV20Pulldown.html

It takes a few minutes to set up but once you do, it's just a matter of running his compiled exe and feeding your .m2t files in. It's fast, automated, and works flawlessly for the test clips I fed it.

how big are the output files? Right now with using HDTVtoMPEG2 and virtual dub, ive gone through about 400gigs for 15min of footage. The avi's are a pain to edit..

Using the Lagarith or Huffyuv codec, files sizes are about 1/4 of uncompressed sizes. I haven't tested these extensively as we take the files to uncompressed here. Steve has links in his page to install the codecs...and they work.

Thanks for the reference on my little workflow app Dennis. Hopefully it will be helpful to everyone. I have fixed the broken links that Dennis was referring to and have also zipped my executable along with the template.avs file for simplicity.

Any idea why I'd be getting this error message?

I can't seem to get this working. I couldn't view the files compressed with the Huffyuv codec. And the file from the Lagarith codec and the uncompress avi is huge. I got a 3.5GB file from the 100MB original m2t file. Maybe I missed some steps??

I haven't tried any large files yet. My standard test footage is about 75m on the original. With the Lagarith codec I'm seeing my test files being about 5.25 times larger than the original, but no larger. The Huffyuv codec is much larger in size, about 2.5 gig. The uncompressed avi is even larger. The larger files take a long while to open for me in WMP, but they all do play. Are you getting an error message why you try to view the Huff generated file?

Another alternative for the large file sizes would be to re-render them in Vegas using an MPG or M2T format (or even WMV if you prefer).

I've been using the files uncompressed here ... but I also tried Huffyuv and Lagarith imports to PP2.0 and they worked fine.

After reading the thread over at DVinfo I found the correct version of the TIVTC plugin, and it did fix the problem. Now I'm having troubles with my converted files being distorted, it may be a problem with Vista and my video card, I'm going to try again on my XP box. Which is what I should have done in the first place. I'm sure we'll get all these kinks worked out, Thanks everyone, and thanks Steve for putting this together. It's a lot faster than After Effects.

EDIT- Got things working nicely. Lagarith codec works. Huff is crashing my system, and Premiere, I'll stick with uncompressed or Lagarith. Thanks again Steve for a great little tool, and thanks Dennis for bringing it to the masses.

No problem SackSnack, it's actually about 95% UI code and 5% workflow code, but gave me a nice little project to work on at home!

So did XP resolve your distortion issues? I saw some of that on my box (also Vista) but only when I tried using the Cineform codec. Huff, Lag & Uncompressed all came out looking great. Even the distorted ones still loaded into Vegas and looked great. For those ones, I just re-rendered on a 24p Vegas timeline back to either WMV or MPG and the re-rendered video looked great. I also have a Vegas plugin version for this, but I'd stick with the app. The Vegas one could use a little more tweaking to support the proper frame start & end points for trimmed clips..

I would just like to say thanks for this whole thing!!!!

You just saved me $500 - Now I don't need to get Aspect HD... at least for now.

I wish I could buy you a beer.

A "virtual" Mac & Jack African Amber is always greatly appreciated

I will likely move to NEO in the future myself (when they fully support Vista), but this is a good stop-gap for the time being. I haven't shot very much 24p personally, this just seemed like a fun program to write to help get me familiarized with some of the other tools out there. I'm still learning a lot about all of this, so these projects really help me out (and make me realize that I still don't know squat!).

The uncompressed or HUFFYUV files are great for archiving, but do you have any recomendations on a free codec that is good for editing in Premiere 2.0 or for creating fast proxies in After Effects?

Hy,

Just a 'lil question.
I'm from Europa ( France ), and my HV20 is 25p ( not 24p ). If it's needed, shutter speed can be 1/50 ( vs 1/48 ).
1) PAL framerate is exactly 25fps, so, do I need a pulldown ?
2) If yes, would your solution work for PAL framerate ?
3) I'm using Magix video Deluxe 2007, is your soft only compatible with Vegas ?

Thx a lot, and I hope those questions don't mean stupid.... :-(

Best regards

Forden

I was able to get this working on my p4 1.8ghz system, but I just built a new core2Duo system, and it processes the footage but then when I view the new file, it's all distorted into purple blocks of video. I think Snacksnack had the same problem, but I don't see a post on how to fix it.

Any help would be great
Thanks

Forden, From what I gather, the PAL versions are not subject to the 24p pulldown hell that the NTSC devices are.

Jaket: Over at dvinfo we've been have the same talk (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=94235&page=6) It appears that installing the XVid codec is resolving some of the distortion issues. Honestly, I'm not sure why that's the case since they aren't explicitely using that particular codec. I do have it on my box as well and have not had the distortion issues. It might be worth a try for you as well.

I installed the latest version of Xvid and BOOM! i didn't evan re-start my system and it started working.
That is kinda of wiered.

Maybe this has already been covered in the other forum.
I just built a new computer
core2Do 2.13GHz
2gigs of DDR2 800
PCIe 16x 128mb
400gb SATA2 Western Digital (Video Drive)
160gb SATA2 Seagate (sys Drive)

The native HDV files play back slick in Vegas 7e.
But the Huffy codec only gives me 10fps at best in any mode, Best full, Preview Auto ect..

Is there anything I can do to get a faster FPS playback with one of these codecs?
Or maybe I need to change something in my system?
