Color Correction Comparison On Broken guy's "Cyn"

BROKEN2005

Well-known member
I have been getting a ton of private message about the color correction so I exported some before and afters and started a new thread talking just about the color correction on the short film"Cyn."

BTW, I'll be posting new webdocs on the main site in the coming weeks so check back at http://www.alittlecyn.com

Below are the before and afters. I was going for a graphic novel vibe. I add grain to give it a bit of grit and pushed the images the the brink. I used Red Giant Software's Magic Bullet Editors and their new product Colorista. As well as a little Natruss.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for taking a look.

i love your stuff dude, but honestly, the originals look far better. much more film like.

Hi Alex, I like the cc'd look youve achieved. When I look at the originals I see somewhat of a night scene because of the blues. When I look at the cc'd versions I see almost a desert like location with sun spilling inside (well a hot place - very much a man on fire look).

Yup, love them all. i actually like the original blue light you have but once you
do the cc it just looks pro. flat out. im a big fan of all 4 images.

I think the effect was really successful on all the selected images but this one.

You lost all distinction between the left man and the background. Would have looked great with a backlight tho.

Dont let the detractors bother you. Do what you feel is right. Its your vision.

Curious as to when we can expect to see any of the web docs.

Looks good but I have to agree with the fact that shadows have lost all detail in the backgrounds. Better lighting would help this I think whilst letting you retain your vision and cc. I love the idea of a "Graphic Novel" look, amazing and very creative indeed. This is definately something you could come to perfect.

Thanks for the cool ideas. I will agree that the details are lost in some shots. These were early cc examples.

Know let the media whoring begin:

Here is a podcast interview I did for the magazine SheUnlimited in LA: http://www.sheunlimited.com/wp/?p=938

Alex Ferrari: The New Quentin Tarantino? (this is crazy by the way...)

Having founded the Enigma Factory in 1997, Alex Ferrari is well on his way to becoming a film phenomenon. Broken, a short film critically acclaimed by Robert Ebert, the Chicago Sun Times, Film Focus UK and Movies Online among many, many more, is one of the most celebrated short films of recent years- and was astoundingly all shot on an $8000 budget. Among his other successes are Daddy’s Home (a sensitive and thought provoking film on the effects of domestic violence seen through a child’s eyes) and producing Behind Forgotten Eyes (a documentary that tells the story of a few women who bravely came forward and spoke of a time in Korean history which many would like to forget- the taking of more than 200,000 Korean women and girls to serve as sexual slaves).

Cyn, his new film, is a trimmed down version of a longer script he created for his upcoming feature film project called ‘Red Princess Blues’. As he developed the Princess short film, he realised that it had less and less in common with his feature project. So then he created Cyn, which was done for under $1000 and, incredibly in six days. Currently on its journey around the festival circuit, its trailer is available for viewing at www.alittlecyn.com.

Alex Ferrari has a unique talent that has some in the industry comparing him to Quentin Tarantino. His films affect anyone who goes to see them. No matter the subject or the budget, Alex Ferrari approaches each film in a daringly thought provoking way.

on the origionals, you definetly need some seperation from the background, as mentioned, a backlight or a rim light. but looks good!
