Jack Felis just got a new cam...

Hey guys, some of you who know me know that I've been a longtime Canon GL1 user and, I'm sad to say, I have to inform you guys that my trusty old GL1 has died. The tape transport finally gave out and I just couldn't see the point in paying the $400 to get it repaired when I could spend a little more and get an HV20, which gives me a lot more, minus some ease of use as far as manual controls go.

Some of you who have visited REDUser.net may remember my NAB rundown where I gave a negative review on the HV20. That was true, the image I was getting on the NAB show model wasn't very pleasing and I was thoroughly disappointed. However, I happened to be in a local Best Buy inbetween classes and they had an HV20 on display. To kill time I played around with it and the image was light years beyond what I saw on the NAB model, now I realize of course that I should have checked the settings more and seen if someone had a bad setting on it or messed with the chroma levels or something before giving it a bad review like I did :(. I apologize.

Now of course, I'll have to set a spot to put my GL1 on display in memory. I placed my order for an HV20 this morning from B&H (they've got it for $950 for those that don't know) and I can't wait to get it and see Barry's HV20 manual control article when it's posted. :)

Glad to be part of the HD(v)/24p crowd now!

Your really going to love this camera Jack, I do! I've also been somehow unsatisfied with my former camcorder purchases, that being the GS120, and GS320, in the end I returned them both. Yet with this camera I've been blown away, it has everything I want, finally a camera I'm happy with!

Honestly, my first thought.

After some months reading you (I believe some of others can say the same about me), including your RED adhesion, that post pro-HV10 @dvinfo.net granted the cine-like properties of the recording device, etc, I thought you were wrong when I could read you @reduser.net or at least, not so good or well-informed. IMHO, the HV20 is the Coppola's prediction or dream (pick one) more than twenty years ago.

My rank:
RED ONE 4K
SI/Cineform 2K
HV20 1080p

All of them, CMOS technology = rolling shutter (but) = most cinematic (cine-like@digital_video or should I call it digital cinema?).

You will love it. It's like buying a fine imported beer...for a the price of a domestic draft.

coudn't have put it better myself.... its not a prosumer cam... but it is definitly a wolf in sheeps clothing

I used to own a GL-1 and the tape transport died on me too. Actually sold mine for $400. I'm really liking the HV20. In standard def, the image is remarkably similar to my old GL-1.
