P2 Card to Ex HD

theyre is one way to power a 2,5 inch external firewire. It is with the tekkeon battery. http://www.expansys.ca/p.aspx?i=137784 It works very well. Using firewire instead of the usb2go has the advantage of being able to check the data. (i had corrupted data with usb2go quiet a few times)Offloading directly to firewire with the data check option take 2 times longer tough. The battery itselfs lasts for a long time and u can use it for many other things like powering a mic preamp, charging a cell phone, even powering the hvx( in case of emergency) . I posted a photo of the setup in another thread but i cant seem to find it.

what firewire harddrive do you have? seems like this could end up being pricey, $175 for the battery and about $130 for an external portable firewire drive. Wouldn't it be better and cheaper to use like a 3rd or 4th gen firewire ipod?
Post your setup if you can.

thanks for the info x002657

i could i find out, if my usb2go makes a veryfy? 32 min for 16gb is it the slow usb connection or is it a veryfy? (there is a lamp named "error", hmmm.)

pierre, very interesting powerpack, thank you.
do you know a 2.5" firewire case, also?

re100, the problem i see with the ipod is, that there is only max. 40gb possible
in the old models. upgrade with a larger disk not possible, because of the firmware.

I think it depends on your specific HDD.

According to Barry's "HVX Book", Page 96 claims "...in 1394 mode, the camera can perform a verification function to verify that the data got copied over properly, and many (or most) USB-OTG devices don't do that."

I suspect this is because control of the external drive depends on the connection; 1394 is controlled by the camera, [i.e. 1394 HOST mode lets the camera serve as a "computer"], while many, (or most) USB-OTG drives are not controlled by the camera; they might better be described as having "self-control."

When I offload via 1394 with verify turned "On", it takes me 8 mins. to copy and verify a 4 GB card. That's 4 mins. for copying and 4 mins. for verify. the LCD shows a progress bar indicating which function - copy or verify - is active at any given time. (The disk I use is large, (320 GB, @ 7,200 RPM, with 8 MB cache,) but I'm not sure the RPM makes a difference in copy & verify time). So, it seems to depend on whether or not your specific USB-OTG drive has a "self-contatined" verify function. If not, the extra time it takes to copy may be due simply to USB-OTG being slower overall than 1394.

(If we're lucky, Barry may join in and confirm/deny that is the case).

Slow Transfer using Firewire

Slow Transfer using Firewire

Hi everyone,

I've read through this thread and others and I'm having a problem that a few people seem to be running into. Here it is:

I took some test footage, 5-6 minutes worth @ 720PN at various frame rates, 32fps to 60fps. I took that P2 card inserted it into the pmica slot of my Dell laptop and transfered that via FW400 to my external G-tech HD using P2 Genie.

Took about 45 minutes. :shocked:I know it shouldn't take that long. Here's my specs:

Dell Latitude notebook, 1.7 ghz, about 37.2 gig, 23 gig free, 512mb Ram

FW400 cable (6ft) connected to the 1394 port to the G-tech drive.

G-tech drive formatted as FAT32.

Any thoughts as to what the heck I'm doing wrong?

thanks in advance!

JP

P2 Firewire slow transfer

P2 Firewire slow transfer

Ah ha!

This might have been mentioned in another thread, but I couldn't find it. Figured out that my incredibly slow rate of transfer from my laptop using P2 Genie was because XP needed an upgrade.

As it turns out, I'm using XP Professional with service pack 2. If you don't have the upgrade, your data rate transfer is slow as molasses. Here's the link to the upgrade.

I upgraded the service pack and my data transfer is super speedy.

cheers,

JP
