Duel-Systems Adapter has been officially released

...What is the deal with having to reboot i have heard some mention, I thought this solution would be plug and play DARN!!...

I am under the impression that you only have to reboot if you remove the adapter itself. You can still insert and remove the p2 cards all you want.

you have the correct impression

ooooookay. Finally found the right drivers. I successfully installed the duel systems drivers but didnt download the right panasonic drivers. I followed the link cynic gave and found the right ones. Well, after about 2 hours of swearing at my computer, its up and running, and wow. This thing is worth the effort. Macbook Pro users take note, this thing is going to put a smile on your face. Soooo much faster than firewire transfers from FS-100 or straight from HVX. I think one of the bigger problems with this thing is panasonics confusing driver website. maybe there should be a specific thread specifically for drivers or something, or better communication from panny.

I agree that their should be a better organzied driver website for Panasonic. It's like reading Japanese when you don't know Japanese. :)

For such a big name company, their site layout is pretty poorly laid out.

I speak Japanese, read Japanese, but even then their Japanese site is difficult to understand. I can imagine their English page is even worse, if you know what I mean :zombie_smiley:

Soooo quick question once all this gets worked out could we potentially mate this with a USB-to-Expresscard reader to use on Desktop as card reader?

There are pci/pcmcia options available now for the pc. None on the Mac that I am aware of. A usb option would not offer any speed benefit over doing it in camera.

I need a reader solution for my edit bay something i can leave hooked up and dump cards to wwithout using my camera as that is a pain int the butt. Obviously there is no express card slot on my G5.

Guess I'm just lucky. Got mine today and it is working fine on my Dell 1705 (XP). Loaded the Duel CD driver then plugged in the Adaptor. The "D" showed up in the system tray and showed it empty.
Plugged in a 8GB P2 with one clip on it (~300Mb), XP asked to load a driver.
I did the manual browse to the C:Progrm Files/Panasonic P2/Card/Driver/WinXP where the "inf" files are, and clicked OK. The Drivers loaded, rebooted, now when I plug in a P2 card, it mounts as a new drive and I can see the CONTENTS folder and the lastclip file. Dragged them off to an external HDD. Also was able to look at the P2 directly with P2 Viewer. Also dumped the folder over to the Mac and imported to FCP. So hopes this helps somebody.

It helped me for my Dell, removed all drivers, reloaded them and tried what you suggested...and taaadaaaaa, it works. Thank you. :)

Basically you can't allow the software to "automatically" look for drivers, it doesn't recognize them, you have to manually go to it.

However I tried this exact same method on my HP and it doesn't work. But working on the Dell. Good enough for now.

There is a USB and FireWire reader that works for the Mac already, the PCD20. It's something like $2,000 but it's a permanent base station that you can leave attached at all times.

Other options would be the P2 Store; you could use its P2 slot as a pass-thru card reader, or the forthcoming P2 Gear.

As far as the USB-to-ExpressCard-to-Duel Adapter-to-P2 card strategy... well... I guess we won't know until someone tries it. Anyone here with a Duel Adapter willing to gamble $40 for the good of the forum?

I mean, who knows -- it may work! It all depends on if the Duel adapter is a USB-based device; if it's a PCI-based device (as I suspect it must be) then this won't work at all. But if it does, this could be a solution for MacBook users who don't even have an ExpressCard slot at all too...

the one bummer with this setup is it prevents me from using my eSATA RAID1 setup to transfer. o well.... i guess i can just use FW800 in RAID 0 for the extra speed :) and then transfer over to the RAID 1 later when the duel systems adapter is removed.

I, for one, believe that Duel will work out the kinks. They are probably staying up nights working on it just because of the opportunity that Apple has provided by abandoning the PCMCIA.

Just look at the energy from this group.

Apple can't really be blamed for wanting to move forward with the new memory options. However, they sure are risking the alienation of a key group of us that run FCP. If I could go back in time (and investment), I might have gone with Vegas or PP. They are very hungry and want our attention.

Maybe Apple and Panasonic are listening.

Are you guys listening?

Sorry, the phone rang and I need to finish my thought:

I want to make films and not have to fuss with the technology. The way I figure it, the two players that have the most at stake are Apple and Panasonic. They are the ones who need to be staying up late to resolve the technology issues...so we can make films using the tools they provide.

If they don't solve it, I know Sony and Adobe and Green Valley and AVID and JVC and Canon will.

I'm done.
