3x 8gig.P2--->P2 Store

Hello Everyone,

I finally broke down and ordered a P2 Store.
After the bad exerience of trying to offload the 8gig P2 Card to my T40 Laptop and having to log the laptop around on a live 6 hour concert shoot, I think I learn my hard lesson.

I want to ask some quick questions before I go off to the next concert assignment.
If I shoot in DVCpro50 (720x480SD) 8 Gig P2, how many minutes/hours can I expect to store in the P2 Store. I am caculating 180Min.
How long does it take to offload the full 60gig P2store to the laptop ? before I can get out and shoot again, or else have to shoot to dv tape. (6 hour concert)

thanks,

Marcus

16 minutes of DVCPro50 per 8 gb card, times 7.5 cards on a 60gb P2 store = 120 minutes max.

I found offloading a full P2 store to a mac G4 PB to be very Sloooooooooow. Like 3-4 hours. Maybe 'cause it's USB.
If you need to shoot non stop for 6 hours, i would go with about four or five 8gb cards and an assistant with a laptop/external FW drive set up.

I made an error in another post, but the trick is to plug the p2 store directly into the usb port on the powerbook, if you put it on a hub it takes forever.

Not all USB hubs are created equal.

Most hubs don't have separate transaction translators for each port on the hub, which causes the entire hub and all attached devices to drop down to 12Mbps (USB 1.1) speeds if you have a full-speed device like a USB mouse, keyboard, joystick, dongle etc. plugged into it.

Belkin pioneered the idea of having one transaction translator for each port on the hub with their TetraHub, but there are other hubs with similar designs.

I didn't have a hub connected when I used it. P2 store directly to Mac 1.5ghz PB and it still took hours.

i have had similar problem- but it seems to be avoidable. open disk activity utility and you can see actual transfer speeds. when i first boot up computer and immediately initiate a transfer speeds are around 12-15 megaBYTES (not to be confused with megabits) per second. this is about as good as you can do for usb p2 store. this means a little over an hour to dump.
mysteriously same config not done immediately speeds are around 3-6 megaBYTES per sec- resulting in 3-4 hour transfer times. only solution- abort and reeboot and restart transfer, wathing disk utility (now analias on my desktop or this reason)
