Whoops, recorded 720p to RAW DV format on firestore

Hello,
I was doing a paying job and an assistant changed the settings on the firestore to record in the RAW-DV format. The camera (HVX200) was outputting in 720p30p mode which normally works great.

Now if I open the footage in QT it says its SD, and looks like many colored boxes changing rapidly. Import into avid fails after "Fast import of QT audio"

I've been in contact with the firestore people and they have SD RAW DV converters but nothing for HD.

This is desperate because I have already been paid... All i want is to see the footage... HELP!

I fear for the worst on this... Can you open this in MPEG Streamclip and then transcode to DVCPRO HD?

Thanks for the quick reply... I fear the worst as well... Thanks for the MPEG streamclip hint, i will be using that software for other transcoding but it dosn't seem to help me on this one.

What I think needs to be done is an old photoshop trick. "Open As" Is there anything out there that I could tell the software to open the footage as DV compressed 720p?

Thanks

Is there any way you can provide a small sample, maybe by recording a few seconds of video using the same settings used during the shoot?

Edius has some RAW DV support, and I'd be glad to check if it can deal with the material. If that works, I could export it in another format.

If the footage was recorded as DV then it is not 720p, it will be 480i.

Thanks for both of the suggestions, Focus Enhancements just got back to me with the suggestion that I "Play" the footage from the firestore and capture it on a deck or into FCP. I'm headed to the Art Institute of Philadelphia to use their HD editing station.

I will also attempt to record just a few seconds so I can send you a small file (smallest I have is 36 megs...) Yer awesome!

I think the smartest advice is to Capture Now in FCP from the FS-100.
I have suggested to Focus several times both as a beta tester, product reviewer and "friend of Focus" that they consider a series of "Easy Set Up" menus like in FCP to prevent this problem of either overlooking a setting or accidentally misconfiguring. At NAB, one of the Focus guys actually wrote down my idea. Let's hope.

I got it! SOLUTION ACHIEVED!!! I used a second firestore and played the RAW DV HD footage over to a drive set to P2 in record, it was real time but worked!

Note, that i wasn't able to get the firestore to capture now in FCP, but that could have been due to a badly maintained system. The footage showed up but would not capture.

Thanks for all the help!

www.alexink.net (not fully stocked with footage but it's up!)

P.S. Yeah, a "settings review" page or something would be great.

Im a newbie when it comes to the Firestore AND FCP. I just got both of them within the past few weeks and already made this same mistake. What kind of capture settings do I need to have in FCP to capture now off the firestore?

FCP settings for capture from Firestore 100

One of the beauties of FCP is that it can edit and perform in so many formats. One of the problems of everything is that there are so many formats...
What works for some may not work for others...

Look in your quick setup menu (control q or in the apple menu) and choose DVCPRO HD and you recorded in (720 or 1080 and the frame rate 59.97 for 30p). That should set up most of what you need. Then go into the AV setup and change your capture settings to Generic HD or something like that.

Save your project and quit FCP. Connect the firestore to the DV I/O port and firewire on the system. Run FCP and open your project. Hit Play on the firestore and make sure timecode is running. Then open the capture window. You should see video. If not try another capture setting.

I don't have FCP in front of me now so some of this is vague, sorry about that.

Your system may not have enough power to capture HD from firewire so this may not work at all.

Best bet is to find another firestore and play from one record to the other, but I understand finding another $2000 drive may be difficult.

Good luck

And remember to power off your FS100 before connecting or disconnecting the firewire cable - especially when you're connecting it to the Mac.

Well it took me about 15 minutes to realize that I was supposed to plug the firewire cable into the DV in/out on the firestore but after that it worked perfectly. Thanks!
