Building Your Own Metal Halide (Low Cost HMI) Fresnel Part II

Cool Lights

I just posted the Part II of my article on building your own metal halide fresnel on my website. This one gets down into the actual mechanics of the conversion.

http://www.coollights.biz/wordpress/archives/33

I clearly showed how it can be done for less than $500 if you're careful about picking the right parts and find a used fresnel for the right price. I did mine for less than $200, but I'm based in China right now so I have a bit of an advantage ;-).

Please follow all electrical safety and metal halide bulb safety guidelines suggested there.

Part I can be found here and was the setup and theory for Part II:

Wow, Cool lights that is a very nice, informative DIY guide. Very uhh "cool"!!

I dont have time to get into lighting right now with all the projects I have going at home (dolly/jib) but when I reach that stage, I ,know where to look. Thanks for that post.

Looking forward to when you roll out your own line of Metal Halide fresnels (for those of us who would rather just purchase, than trying the DYI route)!

Yes that's my method. I show people how to do things themselves but we also provide fully built at a good value for those without the inclination or time to go the DIY route. I do hope at least a few will try this out though. I would love to see some pictures on here soon! Get busy...

On another subject. I would love to get people to respond on what are some of the small parts that would make life easier in building cranes, dollies, glidecams, etc. We have great factory partners here in China and they can really make some nice stuff. If there are some common parts that lots of people need, we may look at carrying some of those. After we have a bunch of responses, let's boil it down to the "TEN MOST WANTED DIY PARTS FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS". Let me know...

I'll start that off with something I want to incorporate into my dolly. That is this

This is a lazy suzan swivel with a welded angle iron. If there was a way to make a prettier yet heftier swivel style bracket for the wheels. Mass produced I dont see why that wouldnt do well. This was the idea of GuySmilez from this thread.

I hope I am not hijacking your thread Coollights.

Maybe you're right. Let's start a different thread and I'll call it the 10 most wanted DIY parts for Independent Filmmakers.
