What monitor(s) are you using to to view your A1 footage?

Feel like I'm still behind the ball with the A1 because I don't have an HD monitor to properly judge what I'm shooting, and to be able to begin to translate what I see on the lcd with what I'm actually shooting. So, I'm asking for feedback from all.

What monitor(s) are you using to to view your A1 footage? (both field and home/office)

I picked up a VIZEO 20" HDTV flatscreen (16X9, found it in COSTCO) and it is working well for me. It has input's for: HDMI, Component, DTV/TV, RGB, and AVI (S-video).

In my current workflow I am running firewire into my Macbook Pro and previewing my Hi-Def output at the same time on the VIZEO (using the component connection from my A1). During playback in FCP I'm previewing the HD timeline with an HDMI connection to the VIZEO from my Macbook Pro (DVI out to HDMI).

On location (when possible) I will use the VIZEO as a monitor during production, giving me a larger format to preview (and the camera operator some breathing room) as well as a playback monitor to review takes in realtime. The VIZEO table-top stand is removable and when on location my plan is to mount it on either a cart or a C-stand, although I have not taken that step yet.

It has a built in HDTV tuner and that was an additional selling point; so optionally I could attach an antenna and pull in our local stations Hi-Def broadcasts. The price was right, in my opinion anyway; I paid $399.00 for it.

How do you power it?

H7Q5-
wanted to thank you again. Picked up the Vizio and feel like for the first time I can begin to really see what I'm shooting with the A1, and can begin to get a grasp on how what I see in the lcd accords with what I've shot.
I know it ain't the perfect solution or the best monitor (hoping they're some good announcements at NAB!), but it is a relatively low cost beginning.
Thanks man.

Good question.

The price is great and I'm sure the results are too...but it's not very practical to walk around with a 20" monitor for field work...unless you'll be shooting all day long the same location.

Yeah, I can't imagine carrying it around with me. But for now it works as an inexpensive studio monitor.

To: SamKam - I'm glad it's working out for you.

Sorry about the confusion; "field" for me is a location where power is available and when the circumstances make the monitor practical. It's nice to be able to gather around a decent size screen, watch a couple of takes, and go "that's it," or someone says "I can do better."

Thanks jleo.

What about the fact that this 15 inch Element is in fact 16:10 (Circuit City lists the aspect as 16:9, but it's really 16:10)? What would that do to the A1's 16:9 component (or HV20's HDMI) image? Do you know whether it would it stretch (bad) or add black bars (good)?

I haven't been able to find much about this Element on forums. I'm guessing it's laughable for color correction, but maybe if one set it up right and the jaggies and aspect ratio weren't problematic, it might be a cheap studio solution.

btw the link you provided was for a $700 32" Insignia set?

The 32" insignia works fine as a PC monitor, we have it hooked up to a Mac running Final Cut Pro, there's a way to fool the mac that it's an Apple Cinema Display to get widescreen resolution. It's still scaled down to 1288 x 768, but acceptable for the price. Last week, the Insignia was on sale for around $700 CDN or $599 US. For full 1920 x 1080 a Sony FullHD HDTV might be better, but 4-6 times the cost .

I haven't tried the 15" HDTV's, but some people on these forums just take their camera into the store and plug it in the component input for evaluation.
