A-1 for sports?

Didn't look at a 720p file. Is it the same footage, just downrezzed? I'm away at NAB, so very limited internet access, I'll probably not be able to get to stuff like that until next week.

hiya a few grabs various shutters, bear in mind the ball is travelling 70mph/112kph..

What kind of camera is this using? I film football, but I am an amateur and cannot afford a camera over $2,000. I am looking at buying a DVX100, so what setting would I put it on for football?

Great grabs Russ. You can really see how upping the shutter speed incrementally improved the motion of the ball. The A- 1 seemed to handle that motion fine. It doesn't look like increasing the shutter speed darkened the picture any. Did you do something to compensate? I'm guessing you deinterlaced the grabs too right?

Ed

MiamiHurricaner those grabs were from a Canon XH-A1. It sells for $3500 US ish but there is currently a $250 US rebate on them. 60i NTSC or 50i PAL and balancing between higher shutter speeds and available light should work good You need to experiment with the cam you are using though. Who are you shooting playing football?
The DVX100 would work fine for what you want and is in your price range used I believe. Especially since the prices on new ones dropped to I think $2650 or so a few days ago. It isn't an HD camera like the XH-A1 but is still a very good and sought after piece of equiptment.

hi Ed, yeah I deinterlaced the grabs and opened the iris to compensate the light loss I do think there is some ghosting or somthing going on though when I pause the footage there is always a kind of shadow there, I'm not sure why the ball "appears" twice in one frame? Ive attached another grab so you can see, maybe I can adjust some other settings Im using disjecta's VIVIDRGB preset not sure if some of the settings in that could cause this

Sorry I haven't replied sooner Russ, had a busy coupla days. I didn't notice that the ball showed twice until you mentioned it. I think I thought they actually were 2 balls (not very familiar with the rules of cricket). That is very odd though, and I must say somewhat disturbing. I think if I had to choose I would take the slower shutter speed with the motion blur over the duplicated ball anyday. I wonder if it is a long GOP issue? How did it look in the actual moving footage?

Ed

it's probably a de-interlacing artifact. field one has half the ball in one position -- field 2 has it in the second. then the inverse teleciner reconstructs two balls from the parts. that's my bet anyway.

yeah I thought so it was 1/100 need to test some diffrent renders/dvd burn to see what it looks like maybe the ghosting issue is just on the time line

Russ

Which NLE do you use? And what was the timeline preset? That VIVIDRGB preset on the camera looks great by the way!

Ed

I use PP2 with cineform aspect HD and start a project with a cineform preset 1440 x 1080 50i or 25p, yeah Disjecta made the VIVIDRGB preset its in the presets sticky

Just a quick 2 second clip of my very first attempt of capturing any kind of "action"

Surfing Clip.... "thwaack" It's downconverted to 720P because this has been my test clip for trying to get footage to work with the PS3 and I still haven't figured out how to get full 1080 to work.

Anyhow, I think the A1 will work great for sports.
