16gig P2 for $1600 ?

Well it looks like they are making it. The real questions now are is it as reliable and what is the price? If its only a 10% reduction on Pana P2 than I wouldn't take the risk (at least not until they have been tried and tested in the field for over a year).

But if they are 30-40% of Panasonic than I will gladly be a tester.

Does anyone know how Hoodman SD and compact Flash cards perform as I assume those are the basis for their design?

Well I would definitely like to hear panasonics side of this story. Are they stopping 3rd party for monopoly or quality control. I doubt I'll get a real answer though.

Given the fact the Focus Enhancements and Specialized Communications are working with Panasonic, I would wonder why the company wouldn't encourage third party development.

I trust that Hoodman has a good attorney reserve if this is being reverse engineered.

And that the process has been heavily documented.

Niether Spec-Com or Focus are trying to produce P2 type media.
And it's been over a year since we all learned of the cineporter...and no product has yet to be released.

I know that neither is trying to produce p2 cards.

My point is that both Focus and SC produce acquisition hardware that competes with p2 cards. Hence, why cooperate with them, and then have issues with someone like Hoodman if the company in fact does have issues.

And SC's Cineporter technology is p2 based, so that also competes even more directly the Focus.

I have been waiting a long time for cards to drop in price and have been renting cards when i need them. Its been costly in time and money, a pain but i live with it. I know panasonics bread and butter must be the networks that buy P2's in high volume. If I find out that Panasonic has been artificially keeping the prices high on P2 I will have to move on to another cam which they better realize is now financially easier to do for the independent who they pushed this cam to, that supported them when all the naysayers came out, that they know are not loaded with cash and should honor them with affordable media.
Its been too long and the only thing that might bring me back is if they announce the 32 gig at NAB for delivery in May alongside the 16gig with significant price drop.

Because of the many many reasons why i will not use a hard drive based system over P2. I can go on to list the reasons but I'm sure you already know. Trying to push the square hole harddrive into the round hole P2 thing has been talked to death. They are not the same. They are not close. The HVX200 is a P2 camera . Did you hear of all those FS-100's used in the Iditarod?

Excellent point.

These are all tools people.

I don't know if the Firestore was used in the Iditarod, nor do I care.

But these tools, and their different uses in different environments with different needs all serve the HVX200 community by providing competition, innovation, lower prices, and in the end, diversity in products.

There are problems with every acquisition medium out there - p2 card, NLE, DTE devices, DV Rack, ScoreBox, etc -- you name it. And promises as well.

Just because you don't use or need one technology doesn't mean that others should follow suit.

We should encourage a diverse and wide choice in these areas more than anything else.

so youre gonna trust your footage to a Tape based Drop out prone HDV system, over a harddrive system? Not saying HDV drops out alot, but it is possible, same as a HD crashing.

I suppose it's a possibility that Panasonic had some licensing requirements regarding royalties and/or quality control that Hoodman wasn't willing to meet. That would definitely be one reason that the cards aren't using the P2 name.

Sorry Tim that won't wash. We used tape before the HVX remember? i don't recall outrage over dropouts then and reading and seeing peoples footage of HDV material I'm still not hearing any complaints. That argument has been thrown out time and time again and I'm not buying the tape dropout issue. It happens , yes but I shot tons of tape and I can't recall any dropout issues I've had and I could shoot for hours with tapes stuffed in my pocket low profile and in a pinch could find cheap tape anywhere. And why does everyone assume shooting is all tripod based. I got cars , bikes, and human bodies to rig to that a hard drive based system won't work.
I like the P2 workflow alot but the P2 pricing I do not and with this new news i am wondering what is going on.
i also noticed in Marc Singers sell list he had a Canon HDV H1 that he used.

Yea bt a drop out on DV effects 1 frame and it susually a sparklie. nothing big.. A drop out on HDV effects the whole GOP. Depending on manufacturer that could be 1/2 sec of footage gone......

Heres the deal on RAW-H2:

June 16th target launch date for the 16 gig, well before the end of the year for 32 gig.
Will NOT be licensed by Panasonic. My contact at Hoodman (VP of Marketing) approached Panny last year, and Panny declined (according to him) to work with Hoodman USA, and license any 3rd party P2 Media.
So, they have been reversed engineered. I'm planning on Beta testing the product sometime before launch.

It is real though. That is a fact. Whether it will be a viable option, that remains to be seen.
I'm optimistic.
And that's exactly why they call it H2 media and not P2...
